Packed up fan....
« on: 13 November 2011, 16:01 »
Right to day my fan decided to retire, car started over heating fan didnt kick in, i've heard theres a 'cheat' you can do to bridge a switch so that the fan is on constant? If so how is it done? I really need a quick fix till payday or i can figure out what has caused the fan to not work???

Car in question is a 91 mk2 Golf driver 1.6

So instead of fixing the thermo stat, you will knacker out the fan and add to your expenses?

My suggestion is to make your life really painfull is to wire the fan to a switching live through the cigi lighter then the switch can be on or off when you need it in traffic? Sounds like fun than getting a socket to change one thermo stat non?

On the rad there is a tiny thermostat it sense temperature to connect the fan to 12V if its knackard the fan won't come on. To test the fan stick 12V across the +- to establish if its working. it can only be thermostat or Fan 50/50

Pretty sure it'll be the 3-pin dual thermoswitch on a '91 Driver.

Dunno where you got those numbers from.  The part number I've quoted has two thermoswitches in it, the first one operates at 95C causing the fan to come on at low speed.  If the temperature continues to rise, the second switch cuts in at 102C and switches the fan to full speed.

Before you buy anything though, check that the fan works.  Unplug the connector from the thermoswitch (down lowish on passenger side of rad).  With a thickish bit of wire, bridge the socket that the pure red wire goes into to each of the other two in turn.  Fan should come on at two different speeds.  No need to switch the ignition on, just keep your fingers/hands out of the way of the fan.
