I to am in your position, I love the car, but the performance could be better. I'm looking at the 1.8t conversion, as the mk4 gti is quick, so imagine the same engine in a lighter, smaller car. can only be epic wins.

besides, it'll shut a few of the smug mk4 drivers up around your area ;)

rubjonny can do a loom for around £100 if you supply the 16v mk3 and 1.8t loom

it has to be the mk3 16v loom or could it be the mk3 8v loom? what about the ecu?

also does the MFA work with the modded loom?

I used my 8v loom and the S3 loom. Only bits left of 8v loom is where it joins fuse box really. All engine side is S3 as is the ECU

My clocks MFA all works as standard

If i go for the 1.8T from the Mk4 do i need to switch the gearbox as well or just ecu and loom? Anyone who has done it what sort of performance do you get? Cheers

You can use a mk3 16V gearbox, power wise 150bhp standard but a remap will get you close to or just over 200bhp.

as wayne says you can use the 16v 02a gearbox, and will get around 200bhp with a remap (which is the standard thing to do) but IMO it feels like you have a lot more as due to the weight and clutch/flywheel/gearbox combo you get crazy amounts of torque and it just keeps pulling and pulling!

there are a few different 1.8ts you can use but the 150 standard ones will be far the cheapest
20vt conversion, sig pic coming soon!

big question is, how much power can the 16v box handle?

The bigger problem is torque

i let you know soon haha, currently got just under 300ibft but this will go up when the big turbo comes
But the Gearbox's are cheap enough to replace.

i use a VR6 Clutch kit by Sachs..

either way, 200bhp in your MK3 will make you feel like a king, honest if i had known this i may not have even bothered going for the S3 lump.. i had a broken MAF at first, and was well down on powe because of it (189 bhp vagcom said) i was smoking everything including absolutly killing VR6's etc

the big problem is traction, i mean ill be getting my remap finished so ill be around 270 bhp, but before the big turbo i need a LSD which costs $$$$$  if not, theirs no point in more power as it will be just wasted (and so will my rubber)

i know what you mean kells. LSDs start about the £700 mark? all they do is limit spinning the wheels??? what other benefit do you get from an LSD?
also which other box will fit the AMK/BAM engine? 2.9 rado CHW code? as the bhp on a 2.9 is 190 and me thinking CHW box will be just right (without a remap) or am i just talking bubbles?
