Engine Conversion....Ideas!
« on: 08 November 2011, 13:09 »
Easy all I have a mk3 8v GTI and am obviously disappointed with the performance (considering the car was bought as 16v, but was miss-registered by the original VW garage!) I do however love my car and have spent some time and money on it.
I am currently toying with the idea of buying an Mk5 GTI engine and dropping it as a long on-going project has anybody attempted this and can offer advice or does anybody have any sort of ideas on the matter.

Cheers :D

1.8t is a good choice, mk5 conversion is major work.

Btw how the hell do you buy a 8v thinking it is a 16v, they look completely different under the bonnet.  :undecided:

Mate try a 16v or VR6 first then get really ambitious!

Go have a look at kells/F17BAD's thread and his S3 engine swap.

tfsi engine?
it's not just the engine, it's everything connected to it.

I've looked into this and it's a lot of work and money.

i was gonna do a 2.0 TFSI and i found out i needed the whole donor car loom from the handbrake forward, theirs also issues on the height of the engine

its a lot of work and a hell of a lot of cash, was was very expense to do as it was...

and after battles against modified TFSI powered cars i can confirm you will be more than happy with 1.8T

Tweed you know the score  proper love mine, and with the downpipe and exhaust i have it sounds fookin awesome, not loud at all, infact its quite on idle, but when it under full load you get like a grunting noise from the actual engine, plus the turbo and induction noises which is a great experience

1.8t ftw, quite a simple conversion now, especially with a GTI and even more so with a valver. A tuned K04 lump is more than enough for a bit of fun.

There is a PnP kit for the 2.0T now isnt there?

Relative N00b when it comes to car mechanics but i find it really interesting and have been learning as i go. The car was registered as a 16V and after i bought it and began doing work on it i found that it had been registered as a 16V  from day one, was pretty pissed off!

Does anybody know of any 1.8T Mk3 mods on here so i could have a look for ideas Have looked into getting a VR6 engine which would be a better choice in terms of performance/ cost /ease of job.

Cheers for posts back :D
