Need new rear brakes - Recommend the pads
« on: 06 November 2011, 17:00 »
Had my MOT yesterday and although my only two advisories were the rear bearings, the discs and pads are getting low.

Up front I have 288mm discs with Mintex M1144 pads, which are great. At the back I'm looking for something a bit less aggressive. I've sourced a pair of brand new discs from an average manufacturer (Trupart). Padswise it's bewteen these two.

As I've already got Mintex up front I'd quite like to keep Mintex setup all round, however if the Brembo's are better then I'll go for them. So, please share your thoughts

Remember rears do little or no work until you have weight in the back, and then its limited by the bias valve.
Its a non track car so stay with the cheap disc theme and go for some hard wearing ATE or Pagid imo, you can tell people they are all mintex as nobody will know or care

No bias valve on the Mk3's as far as I know  :undecided: At least on the GTI's anyway. Don't want hard wearing pads as they'll be no feel on the brakes.

You wont notice the extra dosh on rear pads either on the pedal or stopping distance.
Unless you have a power monster 1.8t and or track car with uprated discs and braking set up it is a waste of money.
I Have gone through sets of EBC on the front discs without changing the rears they do bugger all.
Best off spending more on the fronts, bigger discs calipers etc if you want stopping power.
By all means its your dosh but it will only be for the kudos of saying Mintex/Brembo all round

rears do work.
I had no abs in my 16v. I had greenstuff up front and mintex rears. the rears used to lock up when braking hard on cold brakes. once the greenstuff warmed up it was alright and they locked up lol
get the mintex

Cheers mate, it's what I was thinking. The front mintex are great quality, no doubt the OEM quality stuff is just as good!
