Cheers Jim
What eta would I look for on a set of genuine vw wheels to fit a Golf Gtd.
Also does it say it on the rim?
Thanks

Not Jim but browsing :)

ET48 - 51 should be a perfect fit and stamped inside the rim
I'm not Jim either, but you are quite correct. You can get away with up to about ET44 on an 8 inch rim but that's about the limit, especially if lowered.
I thought the lower the ET the more it sticks out? Learn something new everyday!
Yes Kenny, the lower the ET number the more the wheel pokes out of the arch. You can probably get away with about 38mm on the back but it's the front that tends to make contact. I ran 8x18 ET41 on there for a while and had no issues with rubbing but others have had problems.

They are only 7.5" wide though, aren't they?

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Yes, they're 7.5s rather than 8s

Forgive my ignorance again but could someone give me an idiot's guide to alloy wheels please? I want to ultimately change my Monzas but I don't understand all this talk about offset, 7.5 inch, 8 inch etc. I understand the basics re tyre width (235 and so on) and wheel size (18/19 and so on) but don't get this offset bit at all. I just assumed I could swap my Monzas for any other 18 inch wheel, or even 19 inch wheel for that matter but obviously I can't.
Many thanks

Andy

One difference from your post is that the alloy wheel itself has a dimension i.e. 18" diameter and 8" width whereas the tyre for that wheel is expressed as Width in mm/Wall Height as a Ration to the Width/Rim Diameter i.e a 225/40/18 is 225mm wide, has a 40% of the width (90mm in this case) is for an 18" wheel.

A link that might help re offsets/PCD etc.

Monzas, Monza IIs and Monza Shadows are ET51, 7.5 inches wide and can easily take 10 or even 12mm spacers on the back axle for a purely aesthetic improvement.

It's not overly complicated to work out what wheels will fit. If you're not sure then just post up on the forum and someone will tell you.
I'm far from an expert on the subject but I had (including the original wheels) seven sets of wheels on my last mk6 alone so am quite familiar with what fits. Styling is very subjective and personal so I won't comment too much there, but any questions you have just fire away.
I'd had my current car less than a week before the wheels were swapped over!

If you want to see what effect different wheel width and offset will have, this site has a handy calculator

You are indeed a fine body of men (and women, of course). I will sit down over the weekend and do some reading of the links you gave me. A quick glance seemed to make sense but I ill read further.

It's ironic really. I was one of the big Monza fans on the Mk6 but I'm getting a bit bored of them now and just fancy a meaty 19 incher (oo er missus)
