Newbie Question: RNS 510 Retro-fit
« on: 02 October 2011, 05:10 »
Okay, it has been a good while since I fitted the RNS to my last mk6, and that car didn't have Dynaudio or Bluetooth.
Last time round it was just a matter of bolting the thing in and enabling the 'BAP' in VCDS. Not that I can remember how I even did that bit, thankfully Morty gave me idiot proof instructions with the unit at the time.

So this time round I have factory Bluetooth and Dynaudio to contend with when fitting my early model RNS (no star button) that is running 27** software.
I've asked a mate from another forum if I can once again make use of his VCDS and thus wonder if anyone can give me an idiot proof guide as to what bits I need to code in and what should work automatically before I start the install.
There are bound to be loads of changes to the electronics of the later model car (this car doesn't even give be a bulb out warning with my LED tails!!) on top of the other factory additions specced on this model.
Hell, I expect his VCDS is running later firmware than last time round too as I'm sure it looked different the other week when I recoded the lights back to non-LED mode before the old car went in part-ex.

Also, are there any other recommended little tweaks I can make whilst I've got the VCDS cable in my sweaty hands? Staging was one that sprung immediately to mind  so what else have I forgotten over the last few years?

Thanks for those links chappies, I'd already spent the last couple of days reading them though

The Nav unit is in now, steering wheel buttons working okay I think, bluetooth working okay and the nav itself seems happy enough.

I just need to work out how to activate the dynaudio (sound quality seems okay having been playing about with it whilst engine not running, but no dynaudio message comes up when the unit is switched on unlike the old radio unit), and nav directions on the MFD need activating.

I seem to remember that you need to code the RNS as having Dynaudio and it should then (a) sound better and (b) have the splash screen on start up!

Can't remeber where I read that though..sorry for being a bit vague!

Andy, you should tap SteveP up at the Castle Combe meet next week mate if it's not all sorted by then. What ever the issues you know SteveP will be able to help

Just had a look on mine.

Have you tried....

I *think* you may need to do this in both 37 Navigation and 56 Radio, I'd try Navigation on it's own first.

37 - Navigation

07 - Coding

Long coding helper

Byte 1 - then try the dynaudio @ 05 or 07

optional as you play....

Byte 2 gives the option for 00 - sound system - try that

Then let us know

Thanks Doc.

I'll see if Steve has chance to look at it on Saturday if possible as he's far more familiar with the inner workings of both VCDS and mk6 Golfs than I am. I'd happily donate some pennies towards some of his race fuel for his help!

If things don't go to plan Saturday for whatever reason I'll borrow a cable and have a fiddle with it following your instructions, much appreciated.

I really should buy a cable but I'd only use it once or twice a year maximum. I guess a second hand cable would make more sense if one came up for sale, but they rarely do.
