Absolutely no idea what's going on
sub keeps making noises by itself, whether the stereo is on or off.
I've checked the connections on the back of the sub etc and nothings touching - i'm clueless. any ideas?

Well it must be getting signal from somewhere! Unless you have Gremlins in your car!
Suggest you thoroughly check all amp and sub wiring.

check every single cable, power to amp, the fuse should be as close to the battery as possible, amp earth, should be the shortest cable in the set up, onto the nearest bare body panel as poss, remote, wire up right to the HU, and make sure your RCAs are going down the other side of the car to the amp power cable

EDIT: ive just spoke to a mate who certainly knows his stuff about audio as he has one of the loudest cars in the country in his class, what amp is it? as he said the on/off switch on the amp could be shot depending if its an old amp, something quite simple really
