Research doesn't mean searching forums and asking questions. Because most people won't have done this, especially on an 8V. Books will help but you will be this territory on your own as most will go the 20vt route. Was hard enough for to find out info for an ABF turbo.

Are you kidding?? If you are listeng to people saying you can rebore an 8v to 2.7. You must be!

have a look at this link as it gives info about highest bhp from the 8v (about 200ish but it's not cheap!)

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=101392.0

the guys in america run more than this but I believe the engines are quite different to euro one's?

b.t.w check these info guides too http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=183665.0

being  "genuine" mate,  why start with the 8v? reliable ...yes... good powerful starting block.....NO!!
put a 16v or even better vr6 then super/turbo but 8v.... seriously?

Not a chance, 2.1 is the limit and then it will not be rev happy, 1.8t would be a better choice but aim for around 250bhp more than enough in a mk3.

Shed a load of weight from it as well.
