Got my phone stolen last night... can anyone shed some light?

lol it's not a hobby. We have had quite a few robberies (cats cut off, radios nicked) at the site. we have CCTV. So when I report it the police come and take a statement,

Doesn't sound like a robbery, sounds like a simple theft.
If he is charged he is given a first hearing date, where he pleads guilty or not, if he says not then they adjurn for another date to get more evidence and witnesses. You will be asked to go to court to give your statement.
It may sound like a lot of hassle, but if it happened to someone else and you heard about it you would want them to get the punishment they deserve, if you don't go to court when asked then he will be released, and no doubt just go and do it again. Don't give him the opportunity,

why not speak to the police and get proper advice?

you might find that as you gave him your phone in the first place that you're f**ked, as a clever lawyer could probably argue that you assaulted him after willing lending him your phone

Also, not a chance in hell that any solicitor would get that argument home. If he lent him the phone why did he run off, turn around and threaten to stab him. He gave the phone on the drunken understanding that he just wanted to use it, when he made a dash then he commited the offence of theft, and the OP just used his anyperson powers to make a citizens arrest, it was reasonable force, he didn't assault the thief, just detained him until police arrived.
