Autoglass Windscreens
« on: 19 July 2011, 06:53 »
Morning Folks,

I've had the misfortune of having 'something' smack my windscreen with enough force that it will need replacing.

Have any of you had an autoglass replacement screen and how good a quality are they? I had one done in my previous car and it was not good, mainly due to the heating elements failing.

I had the chap out from AG to do the repair, but it's too far gone for that.

A VW screen supplied and fitted by them is an additional premium of £170 on top of the £50 xs, just wondering from experience if any folks who have had it done have any feedback.

Thanks

Yeah, I had the misfortune aswell mate 2 weeks of owning my Golf! Despite what they tell you it is not a VW window, it's a AG version of the VW Golf window! But I can't fault it, maybe a couple of times in the harsh winter mornings and night the windscreen was badly steamed up but at the end of the day they are breaking the seal to fit a new window and it's just bad luck that we both have/ had to get new windscreens

Had to have AG replace the windscreen on my Bora at the end of June to enable me to sell the car on, no complaints from me, (apart from £100 excess on my ins') fitted with no problems, whereas when the Bora was stolen/recovered a few years before, a 'Smile' windscreen was installed and by the passenger side A pillar the glass was quite badly distorted in one place.... within 2 weeks a tiny, tiny, tiny stone chip appeared right in the middle of the distortion and the screen cracked!
Also a screen replaced by AG is guaranteed for as long as you keep the car, dunno how good *that* is tho.... a stone chip is a stone chip and will usually get repaired for free via your ins' co' if glass is underwritten in your policy.

I have no reason to think that AG glass is in any way inferior to the original, whereas 'Smile' Windscreens I would keep away from.

I've never had a windscreen go on any car I've had in 35 years, perhaps I've been very lucky?

I had a chip repaired by AutoGlass on my last car free under insurance but the mark doesn't disappear all together you can still see a very slight chip in the glass.

I've read reports on the new Golf that the windscreen becomes delaminated the edge of the screen goes a milky colour and VW change it under warranty.

Thanks chaps

my main concern is that the AG one would be pants, but i guess it would be fine. The VW one would have to be ordered via VW and would take a week to arrive, but not sure if the extra £170 on top of the XS is worth paying.

I was aware of the sound deadening in the window, but would I really notice a difference.

The AG rep said when I spoke with him that the AG and VW ones are the same with just a different badge, which I know is tosh sales-speak. I did ask him about the film between the window for sound deadening "yeah, they all have that mate...it's called laminate!"  No sh!t Sherlock

The problem with AG etc is that you could either have one of their best technicians come out or a guy who's not very good and you won't know untill it's too late

Had a front one fitted on my Mk5 which was fine, no problems.

My dad had to have a front window screen fitted twice by AG. The first screen wasn't sealed correctly so as you went down the motorway it whistled over a certain speed

But if your not satisfied - or it goes due to incorrect fitting - that's when their lifetime warranty kicks in
