Hi all,

I’m a relatively new poster to the forum but have been reading for a while now. I have introduced myself in a previous thread (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=194613.msg1817745#msg1817745), but here is a quick summary:-

I do not currently own a Golf.
I have a Passat as a company car.
Currently working on secondment in Germany (near Stuttgart).

As you can see from my previous post, I will be returning to the UK at the end of August/beginning of September 2012, at which point I will be in the market for a new car.

I have never been in the fortunate position to purchase a new car so it is a new experience for me and I am trying to narrow down which one to go for. I am sure many/most of you Gti/Gtd owners have been in this position before and so I would like some advice on why you ended up buying a Golf, instead of one of the competition. Do you regret it or was it the right choice?

The cars I am currently considering and have researched are:-

Mk6 Golf Gti/Gtd
New 2011 BMW 1 series Sport
Seat Leon FR
Alfa Guiletta Cloveleaf or top spec diesel

From reading the various reviews available online, they all get good reviews, with the Golf coming out as the class leader (but ultimately the most expensive when taking into account the options).

I believe there will be a MK3 Leon by the time I return, but the rest will still be the same design. I plan to test drive these when I am back in England in the coming months to get a better appreciation, but I’d appreciate your opinions on the following:-

Is the Golf the best out of the bunch as the various reviews suggest?
Are the others worth considering based on your experience with the Golf?
If you had your chance again would you buy an alternative?
If I go with the Golf, when do you think would be a realistic time to place the order so as I receive it in September 2012? Jan 2012? Earlier?

I realise that it is all pretty subjective (and maybe biased, as I am asking on a Golf forum), but I want to make sure I have considered everything and would be interested in peoples recommendations.

Cheers,
Streety82

I can't believe everyone has been ignoring your thread Streety, I reckon everyone has been a bit like me - bit nervous to make the first suggestion because they know they'll immediately be jumped upon.

Leon FR+ = Best value for money, looks amazing in Speed Blue with a few bits of black trim added for style (Cupra mirror caps and bumper insert, Cupra R rear spoiler). Either engine okay, good deals to be had on petrols but Diesels depreciate less and are popular. Currently come with full spec, xenons, nav, bluetooth etc.

1 Series = Pig ugly, good engines. Rear wheel drive you either love or hate.

Alfa = Looks nice (from most angles), my mate who knows about such things says the engines aren't as charismatic as they could be. Will either be a dream or nightmare to own and probably a nightmare to sell on again. Good choice as a company car if someone else is paying the depreciation, however if so that means you're stuck with it for the lease term!!

Golf = It's a Golf forum so that means we all bought Golfs, for better or for worse (worse in Gilly's case but he only rents his!!!). Expensive, crap spec as standard but we all bought them for a reason......

My girlfriend came home with an article from Which? magazine the other week which looked at running costs and residual value over 3 years.

The Golf came out on top.  Still wouldn't buy a new one though

Nice choice of girlfriend! My Missus just falls alseep at the mere mention of the word 'car'!

I wouldn't buy a new one either:
a) life's too short to wait 9 months for an out of date car!
b) I'd have decided I want something else by the time it was built
c) £££; Dealers have good access to nearly new cars with no wait time if you're fairly flexible with spec and thus you immediately save the VAT.

Love my GTI, I love the ride, I love the sound, I love its looks.  Would I spend £30k+ on a new one? Not on your life.

I think there are better nearly new cars out there for less such as an Audi S4

But you could buy this GTI, the same age as that car for £8k less.
