Timing That Skips? = SOLVED
« on: 04 July 2011, 06:57 »
About the Car - 1993 MK3 GLi - Engine 2E - 8V  - Automatic Transmission (no turbo) (in Taiwan)

Before - the care had a little spunk - touching the gas pedal meant going forward. Getting on it meant use available power.

Problem:

Variables:
Aircon - ON fanspeed 3
Driving time - 1 hour highway driving
OTHER - Alpine stereo, 10 " sub with 4X6.5" door speakers - medium volume

I exited the highway and came to a full stop at a RED LIGHT. It wanted to cut out. The break pedal became heavy, so I put it in neutral from 'D'. I tried to pull over and then it cut out when I tried to accelerate.

It didn't want to start again on the first try - 3rd try was the charm - so I nursed it back home.

Temperature was around 100. (seemed normal)

From full stop to 2000 RPM  NOW - very little power - TURN the AC OFF - then a little more power is available, but not much.

It doesn't matter which gear - D, 3,2,1 ... From 0 to around 2500 RPM, very little power.

Things I've done before the problem occurred:

Cleaned bottom + top, valves - changed gaskets (zero oil leaks), MAF, intake tube etc... Changed dizzy cap, wires + plugs, coil, lots of new hoses all around.

Things I've done after the problem began:

Cleaned MAF, replaced PCV valve, changed timing belt + pully (it was moving unnaturally) - timing was 100% spot on afterwards (Power was available for 1 day, then back to problem) Mechanic said coil was fine, hall sensor was ok (these were replaced with new ones, then tested - same power issue)...

I am thinking O2 sensor, crakshaft position sensor, or lambda sensor... I've also read something about a split in the brake servo vacuum... but any help here would be much appreciated.

edit: I changed the title to reflect the current understanding and solution to my problem.

That will be your biggest problem!
Get timing sorted and see how it is then!

Thanks.

Timing's spot on again. Timing Belt(oem) had slipped 2 notches. Replaced it with one made in Germany.

I'll drive it for a few days and see how it goes.

Thanks for reading.

Is it tight enough? Did you replace the tentioner at the same time?

Was on the way home last night and cut out on the highway in the rain at 90 km/hr - 3000 RPM. Can't figure this out :(

Tensioner was replaced 1 year ago ... it still keeps proper tension on the belt.

Checked the timing again, and the bottom (AUX) was still lined up - and the top (CA) was off by 3 teeth this time (last time, was two) - dizzy was still in correct position, and arm was still in same place...

Any suggestions as to why the timing skips?

Does anyone have a photo or a diagram (labeled) of the timing, belt, pulleys etc... ?

edit: I've decided to pull of and check the cam pulley and the crank pulley for wear -n- tear and just change the tensioner as well.

second edit: crank pulley lost it's lock tooth- changed all of the pulleys and runs like a charm.

As long as you have done that ....   And the dizzy is lined up (you can rotate to get it spot on if need be)   Its correct, the ECU will advance and retard the timing using the coil pack to correct anything within the range of the dizzy.

i have a 2e and been doing the timing on her etc etc and this is a diagram i was sent by Rmachines

hope its of use
