Trouble was, he was dropping down a level;)

Have to agree... the mk6 is simply a "milk the customers as much as possible" VW speciality. no different from what any business would do if they could get away with it.

I have owned my GTI for nearly 16 months and have driven it over 120 miles per week in stop start traffic. This does not bode well for the engine. Besides, the roads I have to use are profusely peppered with some serious potholes some of which I cannot avoid. The car has not missed a beat, has no rattles and drives superbly. I have no complaints about the overall fit and finish and its mechanical refinement. I would recommend the GTI without any hesitation.
It is sad that your experience is the polar opposite.
I really do hope that there is a car out there for you,Gilly.
All the best in your search for your new car.

i have done over 30k in less than 2yrs. 90% of the time i am driving somewhere i need to have been there 20 mins ago. Hence the need for more power (210bhp is pretty crap for a modern day hatch by any standard), which is great in the dry, but pretty much useless in any other conditions. It is the UK after all.

Although i know many on here have purchased the GTI to enjoy every now and then (and can appreciate that) the GTI as a tool, just isnt that great in my book.

Out of those 30k I would say only 5k is motorway miles.

For me the GTI has been a massive disappointment. Im sure I would enjoy it more if it was just a weekend car... but its not, and I very rarely have weekends free anyway .

I'm not supprised your cars been in and out the garage a few times. My sisters other half has just left a flagship audi dealer as he is sick of their unrealistic targets for carrying out servicing and repair works. He was a senior master technician their and often had to knowingly send cars out with faults as management would not allow them the additional time required to fix them correctly. The final straw was then they sent letters to the technicians telling them if they didn't meet targets three months in a row they would get a written warning. Seems unfair to me for what audi charge their customers!
I work with trucks and our garage is much the same. Where once the standards of service were well above the minimum now they are at the legal minimum. Any faults are bodged and left until the vehicle either becomes illegal to drive or the fault lets go big time.

Bang goes your staff VAG discount now Martin! Who does the brother in law work for now?

Yep the downside for me is loosing the VAG discount . His gone to work for a family run Vauxhall dealership (for a wee bit more money as well)..... and no I'm not going to buy a Vauxhall now!

not near Reading is it ?

Whilst i sympathise with you over all the cr@p you've had to put up with your car but you seem to think all MK6 GTI's are useless, badly put together, unreliable etc yet you appear to be one of very few that have had major issues.

I think you've been very unlucky whilst the vast majority of people here love their cars and haven't had a major issues or any at all.

I hope you find a car that doesn't give you the bad experiences you've had with the MK6.

I still dont understand why people seem to think i have destroyed my car. Because i dont wash it?? or would that be because i drive it harder than most??

As much as you would all like to belive that the mk6 GTI is the greatest car ever... it simply isnt. Its an overpriced, poorly made, vw marketing dept's golden egg.

If you are enjoying your GTI then good on you.. im sure Mr VW is enjoying your £20k+ a whole lot more

the focus, civic, mazda, renault... virtually anything. you either buy into the vw b0ll0x about reliability or you dont... ask the mk1, mk2, mk3, mk4 owners about the reliability
