Your 16v probably wasnt working properly then, mine will quite happily sit at 30mph in 5th gear and pull along nicely, even after having the flywheel lightened.

Gonna miss the 1.6 engine I think, can't believe how well it pulls really around town, BETTER then the 2l 8v. Although it runs out of power at 3.8K revs then comes back on at 4.5K.

The VR I was driving the other day round town pulled fine in any gear but the MPG.

2l 8V is a good engine for me ATM purely because I do a lot of motorway and A road driving and in 5th gear it just pulled at 50-70MPH and just cruised along. Plus was good round town cause you could just cruise along in 4th at 30 and put your foot down on hills and it would pull. Although, honestly this 1.6 will outpull the 2l 8v up hills in 5th when the 2l is in 4th. Dunno how that works.

Can't really comment on the 16v as I've driven one once and thought it was the quickest car ever, but I was 17 and had my license for a month.

don't get me wrong the 16v is quicker than a 8v.

It's just low down the rev range a 16v doesn't work as well. It's like 125cc 2stoke, they don't work unless there in the power-band.

Lately I've seen 35 mpg on the way to work, 11 mile trip, but having put £100 in the tank have only got approx 400 mile from it.
:shocked:Yikes...i can get 200 miles out of £30 worth without too much trouble.

Well I've had the maf off this weekend to give it a clean, and cleaned the throttle body. So will see what difference that makes

Frankly that is just bull.

As argued on many, many forums, at no point does a mk3 8v make more torque or power than a 16v - why is that hard to understand?!  If an 8v making less power and torque than a 16v (at any part of the rev range) is perfectly driveable at lower speeds in high gears, why on earth would a 16v be any different.  It's such a pointless argument.  Ergo my comment about your 16v possibly not being in the best condition/running right.  If it is, there is NO reason why you cant drive it in top gear at lower speeds.

If you are trying to hammer the engine at low speeds in a high gear then of course it is going to struggle - right gear for the right situation of course - and that is where the 16v excels. Perfectly driveable, like the 8v at lower speeds, but so much more to offer when you do want to go somewhere = where the 8v is puffless.

This is interesting because it brings into the mix the different gearing of the respective GTI gearboxes.  The mk3 8v GTI probably has gearing more suited to the limited torque and power available to it, designed to get the best out of the engine.  It may feel more driveable at lower speeds because of this, but the 16v still makes more torque and power and is perfectly suited to driving at 30-40mph in 5th, I do it all the time.

Perhaps, yes. Maybe it's due to the fact the 1.6 is purely a town car, so the ratios are built for that?

Sorry, i think your wrong, i've driven a lot of different cars over the past 22 years and a lot of properly fast stuff too, i haven't driven a 16v although i have a relative who has one so i'm going to get hold of him for a test drive, but my 8v feels good to drive, it's quick off the mark pulls really strongly through the gears and doesn't feel at all gutless.
16v v 8v yet again, well i think a lot depends on the driver and how well maintained the car is so i reckon there's not much in it for everyday driving on everyday roads.
