Mk3 cl automatic bucks into first gear
« on: 02 June 2011, 03:31 »
Hi i have a 1996 mkiii cl automatic and it tends to buck and punch itself into first gear sometimes. It will do this most often after a downshift from a full stop. It will do this one or twice and then stop doing this for the rest of the trip. It feeks as if a lot of damage is being dobe to the transmission. Lately it is having trouble upshifting as well not just into first but other gears as well. Since the transmission is sealed i can't check the fluid level.

Any help please?

Shouldn't volkswagen service these auto transmissions for free? I mean the lifetime guarantee should allow for free inspections of the transmission when it is acting up.

Help me out people as i love this car.

Not fair vw that you make a car with a "sealed" transmission.

Can't even check the fluid level.

You will be able to check the fluid level.
Is it like the Audi where the filler plug is underneath?

no idea...i think so...it's an 01M box.

Would be a cheap fix to simply top up the fluid..

I'll let you know as I don't have the owner's manual with me...

The car is in the parking lot at work...where do I find the engine code???

(is it that metal plate with all the details of the car???)

There should be a sticker in the boot under the carpet, or try the owners manual.

Yes that helps.
There is a plug on the top of the sump, remove the cap and pull plug out of filler pipe.
ATF should trickle out of the level hole.
Test it when the gearbox is in park and the fluid is cooler than 30 degrees.
