people running stuff like megasquirt are going to have to sell up...

thats not the point, megasquirt etc is fine, because its standalone. the point the OEMs are putting accross is that tuners are accessing their software, recoding it, and then distributing it on a commercial basis without licencing etc.
Put it this way, if you hacked into windows, recoded it and made it work differently and then tried to SELL it commercially, then Microsoft would most likely kick off. The issue theyre making is software (engine map) based NOT hardware (megasquirt et al) based.

standard is wank....

Why does my car need to be able to run on 92 ron fuel just because some other euro countries sell it! I'm never taking my car there so I should be allowed to set my engine for 98 ron only and enjoy some better performance

Exhaust wise it'll be the same issue, as decats, if your running a decat you just refit your cat for mot time, it'll be the same for your loud exhaust for example Ive got no cat and no mid box come mot time I'd refit them

I would have thought that with tightening up the MOT we could expect to see more roadworthyness inspections by the rozzers, which would put you in the brown stuff if you do this.

Depends who nicks you your run about town cop wouldn't have the knowledge to do anything but a jobsworth traffic cop will rape your bottom.
Do you reckon they'll tighten up on motorbikes then? As most of them are stupidly loud,
