My mk3 1.4 banger
« on: 22 March 2011, 22:52 »
Hi there, im new to the forum and thought i would post a few pictures of my project car, hopefully im posting this in the correct place. :)

Got this car given to me from my parents and the only money i have put into it so far is new rear wheel bearings, so its a bit of a result. Ok so the car isnt that great, the body is pretty sound, but i am having a few problems with my idle, made a post about it here...... http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=187176.0
If anyone can help i would appriciate it

So here is a photo of it after a good clean

As you can see, i have done the bonnet mod and i had to change the rear tailgate as the old one was rather rusty, im planning on doing the swiss cheese mod, the joey mod and change the dash board lights within the next few weeks.
But the main issue i need to fix atm is the idle, so if you have any ideas even just common idling faults please do post them so i can try them out as i have the next couple of days of work :)

Any comments/suggestions/help is welcomed

Cheers Alan

Shell looks really good!

Some nice wheels, bit of a drop and a red tailgate and that'll look excellent! :afro:

Yeah the shell is nearly perfect, planning on sorting out colours soon, but i have loads of ideas that are above the look of it aha ;D

So today i was a bit busy after finally getting it to idle i thought i would take some photos to remember what it used to look like before i put the work into it
So first of i swiss cheesed my airbox, and found some piping to use as my cold air feed.

On the second photo as you can see i have left the pipes inside should i dremel them out? or will they not make much of a difference?

Well now it is running and the only issue i know of is a small leak in the exhaust i thought i would start cleaning up the engine bay
This is what it currently looks like

As you can see it has seen better days so im thinking i might take the cover of tomorrow rub it down and spray it matt black
Started it today but i ran out of time and im going to take it off tomorrow as it will make life so much easier.

Also going to attempt to find all the earth points to clean them up, as suggested by Khare.
Is there any other little jobs that dont cost money but could need regular attention? As im fairly new to cars
Any advice and suggestions would be great
Thanks Alan

Good job on the airbox, looks great.

My advice however would have been to get the bottom of an 8v box (hasn't got the hot air pipe inlet) and do what you did to it. But as you've now done it already then close off the hot air inlet somehow and smooth the top half of the box.

Here's inspiration for you

Looks messy, but it's effective and in real life it doesn't look as messy.

I'd get rid of the hot air pipe as well, does nothing apart from let hot air into the system.

Nice little base car,

you have to love the sound of a drilled air box when giving it full beans

Nice! i picked that bottom half of the airbox up from my local scrappy got it for £2 it was the only golf they had, so i thought just to mess about with id buy it :)
Khare........on the top photo you posted the inlet you have there is that where yur cold air feed goes in or just left open? dunno weather to put the cold feed into the pipe i have or just place it in the hole iv cut out?
Also doing this to my 1.4 will i have any tuning issues or what not? as i know more cold air increases power so do i need to re tune it?
Yeah i shall remove the hot air pipe when i fit the modded box in

No my cold air feed goes on the corner above the velocity stack, you can just about see the cut, below the clip that holds both halves together. You can put it in where the velocity stack is or were you've cut out the section.

No need to retune, ECU will adjust the mixture
