looking good dude ;)

sure you cant get the insurance any cheaper than that? if you go on your mums policy just make sure you still get your own no claims otherwise it will take ages to get cheaper insurance

Cheers mate, When your back from uni, do you fancy a day on working on the golf's?

Well the reason it is that high is because that company will allow me to take my no claims and i want to pay monthly so the premium stung me pretty bad
but that was just a quick search to see if i could afford to drive to decide weather i wanted lessons or not, got my lesson next thursday  PAY DAY!

Not wanting to p!ss on your bonfire, but going on your mum's policy if it is your car is classed as fronting, insurance companies really don't like it

Have you got a quote in your name with your mum/dad/any other experienced drivers as named drivers? I found that my premuim almost halved when my parents went onto my policy when I was your age

Also don't be tempted by companies offering shorter policies which still give you a years no claims....some other insurers refuse to acknowledge the discount.

Joey mod is a simple and effective mod, as are things like black badges, dewipering the rear etc

Thank you for the word of advice, the car is in my mums name any way, cant be bothered to transfer the papers over also thats how i can have her as the proposer, as well as the insurance company i found will let the named drivers take there no claims so it was a bit of a bonus really, but im not going to be needing insurance for a good few months as im still doing my lessons, but i will have a real good look around for cheaper quotes that was just a 20 minute find

Yeah im now going out to clean my engone cover, do the joey mod, fit my cold air feed, give it a proper clean and might look into dewipering, see how it looks

I will post photos this evening

Even if your mum is the registered owner the insurance must e to the name of the main driver. If you have an accident and they request pictures of your car or someone goes to see it and notice it's modified then they'll suspect your the main driver and you'll be knee deep in sh!t.

Look for cheaper quotes too btw, when I was 18 I paid £1300 for a GTI 8v. Now I'm 20 (I do have 3 year's NCB though) I'm paying £1200 for a 16v, so there are cheaper places if you look. Check out the insurance section, loads of info there.

sam we can work on them at mine if you can drive to mine that is? i have 2 days off a week now so plenty of free time to work on them

As for the insurance as im only now doing driving lessons i did that quote in the space of 20 minutes to see weather or not i could afford it, if there are cheaper quotes out there then its all good and as for when i want to insure i will do my research before i decide what quote to get

Anyway what i did today, tbh it doesnt seem like i have done a lot, but i have plenty of photos and questions to ask so here goes
So firstly i took khares advice and did some work on my airbox, i dremeled the hot and cold feed pipes away inside the box, found some nice pipe for a cold air feed so now thats all ready to go in the car looks like this now

Just need to block of the old hot air feed and im sorted

Next my mum comes home and offers to take me to my local scrappy to see if they had any mk3's typically the day we decide to go they have no vw's what so ever so ended up coming out of with only one item that looks like this........

I think it looks a bit better than the old one, just a little touch really

When i got back i decided to take the cam cover of so i could rub it down and spray it when i took it off got a bit of a shock when i turned it over...........

Spoke to my dad about it, he said it could be one of two things, the head gasket is shot allowing water into the oil or as the engine only ever gets started and runs on tick over as i cant goanywhere in it the damp may of just built up and the oil isnt getting hot enough to evaporate the moist so it forms like that, dunno what you guys might think it is any advice would be good?

I then took the front grill of to remove the head lights to begin the joey mod, they came of nice and easy, got my mums nice hairdryer and began to warm it up whilst apply pressure with a screw driver and the fronts came of rather easy but then noticed i have a issue, the tutorial i found on the joey mod says paint the rough bits of the inside not the reflective bits (pretty obvious) but anyway everyone elses lights seem to be diffrent to mine because i have reflective bits all over the utside now can i paint them as they arnt angled towards the light or is it my unluckyness to have a set that cant be done i took some photos so you understand what i mean........

If anyone can tell me weather ill be ok to paint the outside or not it would be a great help?

So the last thing i found today was when the grill was off i noticed i had a puddle on the ground and it seems like i have a leak in my radiator  so thats another job i must do tomorrow, its not bad but i am leaving little puddles where ever i go

Sorry about the post being picture heavy but its the easiest way of showing what i have done and for others to try and help me with my questions

Also forgot to say, spoke to a mate that i work with he drives a real nice mk3 2.0 gti but as his wife is pregnant again he is going to have to sell it to buy a family car so i asked how much he wants he said 200 - 300 so i spoke to my dad he said i should buy it put the 1.4 motor in it for now then when im old enough have the 2.0l ready to drop in what do you guys reckon? is it as easy as it sounds?  or is it gunna be a bit more complex? The gti will come with 4 months mot and tax so its a good runner but i cant get insured on it, well not for my price bracket anyway

You would have to declare the engine change in the GTI as a mod, so I expect the insurance premium would be higher than a standard 1.4. Also it would be a major headache, everything is different! The slam panel, rads, gear linkage, loom etc for starters, I expect the driveshafts would need changing, the steering rack, wishbones, exhaust, fuelling system including pump, etc etc. It's just not really worth it to be honest. I considered going the other way putting a gti engine in my 1.4 but it turns out pretty much every part of the car bar the main shell is different (better) in some way on the gti than the CL, hence why I just bought a gti.

In terms of your headlights yours are standard CL ones, I'm not sure if you have noticed GTI ones are different (I didnt spot it for a month or so of ownership of my 1.4 so you may have missed it too). Check Bellends dub rides thread, I noticed he has done the mod you are doing to the CL lights on his, might be worth dropping him a message?

buy your mates gti and swap any of the nicer gti bits over eg headlights, spoiler, bumpers

then either scrap or sell on whats left
