Dash lights going out with headlights on- faulty switch?

Wee problem to sort on a friends car, its a GL with hazard switch on the dash.

All the dash lights work with the light switch pressed in one notch (side lights on) but go out when its pushed in the second notch (headlights on).

Is it likely this is just a faulty switch?

My mk1 did similar, turned out the switch was faulty.  Have you tried fiddling with the fader for the dash lights as these are normally the first thing to start going, if they flicker when you move the dial then it's a bit tired,  but can be cleaned up without too much hassle or replaced from various other dubs of a similar year...

The fader seems ok, with a good contact from the connector legs.  I had thought it would be the switch as the dash light are bright then just go out on moving the switch from position 1 to 2 (sidelights to main).

Switches dont seem to be too much, so we'll probably just get one...

it could be either the headlight switch or the flasher switch in the stalk, can you flash the main beams with it?

Yes, main beam will flash and stay on with the stalk.

its an 11 pin switch, will any 11 pin replacement be the same?

oops ignore me i thought you meant headlights go out.

yep any 11pin switch will be a direct swap

I've got a couple if interested - one came off my car as I have just replaced all my dash switches with new ones!!
