hi would you buy a CAT D golf gti??

hi everyone, new user here, been searching over the net for details on GTI's it was either the GTI R32 or the mazda 3 mps.  In my mid 30's and wanted a little hot hatch for my mundane drive to work although I use the A127 and if anyone knows that road I dont normally get above 40mph on the way to work or indeed on the way back.

Just looking for advice.  Ive settled on a MK5, wanted the R32 but after reading reviews most suggest plumping fo the GTi, which for me is more than enough, and performance isnt that much better on the R32.  Although i love the sound of the R32!! 

OK so now on the hunt for the perfect golf for me, i ahve time on my hands but have money in my pocket!! I suppose a good combination.

Next question, cat d cars, would you buy one if the price is right or stay well clear?  see a lovely little golf but is a CAT D so price well under what a straight car would be, havent seen the car as there is some travelling to see it.  Would get a AA inspection too for the sake of £150.00.

For me the car i want is something to keep i wouldnt want to be selling it in a couple of years so resell not a worry to me.

Any tips on choosing a car, probably too much to list, but done the usual searching on google for known problems on GTi.

Personally I would steer clear, the value of a straight GTI has taken a knock lately so you should be able to pick up a bargain there are plenty up for sale.

The price may be tempting, but at some point you will have to sell it.  By having a cat D car you are massively restricting the amount of people you can sell to, most people won't even take a second look, if cat d is mentioned in an advert its a big turn off.

forgot to mention budget, - 12-13k... so r32 unlikely with decent mileage but shoudl be abl to get a GTI with under 30k of miles.  Still got to read up on the spec lists as i can see what sort of extras were availible.

yeah, must admit the guy over the road to me whos a MG nut, when i mentiond cat D he recoiled in stunned look! just said you might not get fully comp but admiral said no problem too me, £450 fully comp which isnt too bad.

The main issue with insurance is they are very limited in what they will pay with it being repaired before, sometimes only half of what the car is really worth.

£450.00 Is what I pay also, Admiral are pretty good on price.  Its up to you at the end of the day, personally I would avoid anything thats been damaged before.

have you got a decent driving record, years ago i own a renault 5 GT and racked up a couple of bans but been good for the last 10 years (owning a honda accord, rover 214 might have helped) so my licence is clean and i have abut 8 years no claims.... 35 years young might help tooo
