Personally would say go for it as long has you do your home work on the car in question,  VIC checks and the repairing garage should give some kind of receipt for the work undertaken and a tech report.

I have a Cat C Golf GT tdi and have had it for the last 4 year with out 1 bit of trouble,  I don't intend to get rid of it and will use it for at least another couple of years. I was always prepared to keep the car long term so wasn't bothered about the resale value and know for sure it will be worth 50p when I come to sell it

If the history is suspicious walk away, if the owner seems dodgy walk away, if any thing at all seem not right walk away but don't just brush all cat c-d cars out of the equation when buying,

As for insurance I had no trouble and I'm with Admiral they said if the car was damaged and had to pay out they will pay what its worth at the time pre accident, and wouldn't bring the previous damage into the claim.

thanks, i think that as i asked some searchign questions he wouldnt reply back, sent twice as i though maybe first one got lost but no replies. questions like who repair the car, if there is any warranty on the repairs, is it VW service history.  He said he bought the car as a cat D and has it on good authority that it was repaired using OEM parts etc, and all servicing was carried out by VW.  VW say different and that they havent seent he car since 2008 when it was a callback to the rollbar.  I will still look at cat D's if i find a good one. Like you i intend to keep it so i'm not bothered about how much it drops in a few years time. The 6 owners puts me off aswell, thats alot of owners in such a short space of time, especially since he has had the car for a year (its only a 2008 model)

Yeh I think I was quite lucky has my GT has full service history and VW didn't even question the previous damage when they was doing warranty work on it.

Flown through the last 2 MOTs and the last 4 wheel alignment i had done after fitting my coilovers was perfect, apart from the front camber but that was down to how low I had the car, it can be dialed out by raising the suspension.
