What you get with a newish cat D car is one of those nasty wrecks you sometimes see.  Fixed up by a back street garage and polished to look really good.  Don't do it.  Wih your budget you should get a really nice, good as new, GTI.

Ask the seller where the services were carried out and when. Is there one big VW computer or do dealer networks keep their own records? Not sure myself but it's worth asking him if you're interested

VW told me there is one big computer, VW showed as.
18 march 2008 first registered
7th may 2008  Rollbar repaired by VW (vehicle callback not accident damage)
9.12.08 - repair (doesnt state what repair was carried out) but hes already told me that it wasnt VW that repaired it.
ive sent another question to him to see what he says? like the car but dont what something thats going to give me loads of hassle.

Cat D is not necessarily a bad thing, granted you'll have to do your homework as to what repairs the car required and what the quality of that work was.  Provided it's a big saving I'd consider it, but as mentioned you'll need to price accordingly when you come to sell it yourself and expect a lot of questions asked by the buyer.

But as some of the guys have mentioned there a lots of non Cat D cars out there.  But then if your budget is tight and it allows you to get the car you want then fine.

It being Cat D only shows that somebody declared the accident to their insurer, there will be plenty of non Cat D cars out there that the owner just had repaired themselves to avoid an insurance claim.  Bosh a secondhand wing on, lights and front clip of ebay and sell it on.
