Steering wheel Airbag removal
« on: 18 January 2011, 22:07 »
Having some serious problems with this. How do I remove the airbag from the steering wheel? In principle, I can see how I should do it. I see the 2 clips on the back, but Im having huge difficulties actually getting it off. Is there some sort of trick to it?

I've not taken the one off my mk6 as I've had no call to, but I've done 3 mk5 ones which are basically the same wheel with cosmetic differences.
Use a mirror if you hadn't already, much easier to see where you're poking and a big thick flat head screwdriver as Doc suggests.
When it comes off it does quite suddenly as the springs are quite springy.
Technically I should say here that you should remove the battery terminals first and make sure there is absolutely no static electricity in the car or you could end up looking slightly different from now on. Good luck!

The Mk6 has four plastic clips inside the wheel as well as the visible metal ones.

Like the Doc say it only requires a flat head screw driver but does take some force to get the airbag to release from the clips inside, way more than the Mk5 wheel.

Disconnect the battery and leave for at least 20mins before doing anything.

Surely the ECU or internal IT system would need to be notified of this as well, else it will keep appearing as a fault when servicing or MOT ?

If the battery is disconnected then no fault will be logged.

If the battery is disconnected then no fault will be logged.

When they replenished my front bumper they disconnected the battery and Darren discoverd numerous fault codes.

The car went in twice after that for rear bumper fettling and they have not told me whether they disconnected the battery or not. They had to remove the rear sensors for the paint job. I have a sneaky feeling my car will be registering fault codes again.

There is only one person close to me with a laptop and the necessary software and expertise who can check this. Will he be available at some stage in the future if I give him plenty of notice to make a 6.30 pm date in Knightsbridge? Am I being too presumptious?

Sorry a bit OT.

Just a note: If you disconnectthe battery it will log fault codes (not airbag laching ones) but they self clear after a while. I have done work for TRW airbag systems  As said just disconnect the battery and leave for 20m->1h  allowing the capacitance in the airbag control unit to discharge.

Also worthwhile making sure you have earthed yourself or touched an earth point before touching the airbag as a static discharge could set it off.
