Lord knows how long I'll keep mine. I normally have a habit of getting shot of my newer cars after a year or so when something else is released that takes my fancy, but I keep my older cars for much longer as they feel more like a family member.
Then again, I don't use my newer cars much as I just jump in my runabout most days knowing full well I don't care if it gets bumped or scraped. I tend to have a bit of OCD with my newer 'pride and joy' car so tend to leave it wrapped up in the garage. Silly really.

I have never bought a brand new car, I tend to spend quite a while sourcing a car that I want as I change cars quite often so have to make sure I really have the very best deal I can possibly get to minimise depreciation. Its a bit of a 'thrill of the chace' kind of thing which I find far more intoxicating than actually owning and driving the car! My wife often says she's glad I'm like that with cars and not women (however I'm always open to offers!!!  )

And as this thread is three pages long now it's been on topic far too long and the moderators will just get lazy  So, Snoops, is that an Exeo I see in your sig?  :smug: Care to provide us with more info?

So my answer to the original question is ''f**k knows''  I kind of like the thought of keeping it a long time though, as new cars get more and more expensive and more and more like white goods (no offence meant to owners of white cars there, as I love white GTIs).

Thanks, just Googled it.

Another Golf  or do you you fancy something else?

If things continue the way they are going I'd probably look at another Golf but then again if VW continue with their crazy pricing I may well look elsewhere.

I'd agree with what you say about the prices, i'm pretty sure i'll stay with VAG personally though, i'd even consider going to Skoda! they do a couple of tasty cars now.

Which ones were you thinking of? I had been looking at getting a car for my wife and went and checked out the Skodas, the top of the line Fabia (not the VRS) did not feel good to be in. Fit and finish in the cabin felt distinctly budget and I swore I was going to break the indicator stalk off at every turn. I've no doubt about their mechanical integrity but I could never see myself in one.

I shall be keeping my car for another 3 years so its completly paid off. Then I shall be starting the whole mad process of bying another one. I've done this more or less since I was 20 years old (37 now) so I dread to think how much finance I've paid on cars over the years. However I work hard, have a fairly stressful job and a 30 mile commute in to london everyday and so the GTi proivdes me with lots of thrills and that bit of luxury I need. This has certainly been the best car I've ever been lucky enough to own.

I had a drive of my sisters brand new fully loaded mazda mps yesterday. Now there's a story which I'll post on another thread.

Ps typing this on my blackberry so sorry for the spelling mistakes.

My GTD was bought for work, the plan being to change it for a new GTD every two years or shorter if I feel so inclined (or GT TDI if there is no GTD at the time)

Mainly the Octavia VRs and the Superb, i know the latter is bit of a stupid name but when i see one i can't help thinking it's a nice car, i think i'd consider the Octavia if i couldn't afford a GTI mainly because the current leon is bit crap inside imo. However having said all that i love my GTI and like Golfti i don't like the thought of changing atm.
Currently pootling around in our family wagen, a Tiguan SEL 😂

I'll keep mine for 3-4 years i think.

Depending on what position im in financially i'll either pickup a MK6 R or maybe hold out for the MK7 R.

After having the MK4 R32 for 6 years, i want to go back to 4 motion next time.

p3asa: You cannot be serious and accuse Skoda of making 'tasty' cars. They might be reliable and well made but they look like toads. It certainly takes a leap of faith to hanker for one of them.

 I think you want to re read the thread as I said no such thing!!

However I'm not a badge snob and currently have a beat up S reg Skoda estate on my drive that I regularly have to jump start which I use on dodgy trips. Going to shopping car parks, the dump, and going to the football. Its a great feeling to know you can park it or drive it anywhere and not constantly be paranoid about it.  Plus, the car and insurance cost less than 4 winter wheels and tyres and drives like a dream in the snow
