Amanda 1, Amanda 1,
London calling, London calling.
I need tea and sympathy, fell down the stairs on a London bus and smashed my shoulder. Am having a holiday in bed!
Oscar 2,
Over and out.
From Vancouver with love
Poor you, hope you are receiving lots of TLC.  You'd love it out here, for me it's probably the most beautiful city in the world.
Take care and get well soon
PS Am driving an automatic Chevvy, I don't rate it much and miss my manual GTI  but not enough to come home yet.

I have PM'd you.

I'm 33. First GTI. Would have had the Mk5 but lived in central London where I would have had to walk a block to the car park and for me, stepping out your front door and having your car right there is important.

Have mainly had Mercedes (classics generally - '72 450SLC, '69 280SL) but got tired of the problems of old car temperamental behaviour. Also had a Toyota Hilux (Land Rover recovery vehicle) or three. I nearly went for a C-Class AMG in favour of the GTI but it would have been a waste given how little I'd be able to drive it over 20mph given how slow traffic is. Average speed on my trip computer over this week - 7MPH! The GTI is a bit of a waste in that regard if I'm being honest.

Reckon I'm hanging on to the GTI for about 5 years and then I'll see what the R is looking like at that stage. Maybe it'll be electric and zero emissions?

Hope you are well.

Mildly WOT!

I'm 68 and this is my second gti. Previous cars are a 1.7 Ford Puma, a Peugeot 106 gti and a Citroen AX GT. All cars with decent performance and I loved them all.

I'm sure we had this thread before....  Never mind, it's a good topic.

I'm 57.

I couldn't afford a car of any sort when I was a student (a state which lasted for 10 years), or even when I started my first job as a university lecturer.  I ran a Honda CG125 motorbike.  However, it was the running costs I couldn't afford rather than the car itself, and all the cars I've bought have been new.  (For about 18 years in the middle, all my motoring expenses, including the purchase of both Ferdinand and Ariel, were picked up by my business, so it wasn't all bad.)

First car was bought in October 1985, a Fiesta 1.1L called Miranda.  Great car, but not exactly "performance".

Second car was bought in December 1993, a Fiesta XR2 called Ferdinand.  Nice enough car but an absolute cop magnet.  I got fed up being stopped on suspicion of driving an XR2, and driving for almost 3 years with 11 points on my licence was no fun either.

Third car was bought in February 1998, a Peugeot 306 GTi-6 called Ariel.  (Anybody seeing a pattern here?)  Absolutely terrific car, and before anybody starts, I chose it over the Golf MKIII GTi because it was faster and generally all-round a better car.  So there.

Ariel was fed to the scrappage scheme in September 2009, as documented elsewhere in the forum, and succeeded by Prospero, a Blue Graphite DSG MkVI GTi.  The first 5-door car I've had, due to changing personal circumstances.  This is also a completely, totally triffic car.

Rolfe.

The OP should start comprising a list of members with their ages and calculate an average age. Best to wait for a week or so for a large enough sample for this calculation. However, he should start the table ASAP so that we can add to it. It is a bit of work, but worth it IMO.

My first car in the UK in 1974 was a Red Datsun 240Z Sports Car and my present car is a Red Golf GTI Family Hatchback. I love Red. Previous to that I lived in the East and was driven in Mercedes.

My age has been revealed in my first post.

Rolfe: I too had a Peugeot 306 GTi-6 in black, which I wrote-off. It was a brilliant car with amazing handling/ride and was much, much better than the GTI of the time. Probably the best hot hatch IMO.
