Moving on :-( But not just yet (arm twisted)
« on: 19 December 2010, 21:24 »
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you guys here for the advise you game me in the build up to ordering and getting me through the build period. Unfortunately i'm going to be parting with the GTi, despite only owning it 6 months.

It's been a superb, car but in our current situation we really need a car that can make it out and about in this snow. Sticking with VW, but going to hunt down a 57/08 plate Touareg. Can't afford not to make it into work.

It's been very entertaining reading some of your threads over the years, especially the arguments/debates!!!

I think after the new year i'll advertise the Gti.  Sad times!

Thanks again all and merry Christmas!

I can't blanme you squirrelGTi. Was out with the lads today and the 4x4's route is certainly the way a lot of the guys seem to be going down now for practical reasons. Glad your sticking with vw.

All the best fella, have a great xmas and a happy new year.

Thanks for all your valued posts.

Decent set of winter tyres? don't forget it's only a few weeks of the year we get it like this.  I live on the North Yorkshire Moors, like Scotland we get real snow, I've fitted 4 winter tyres and so far have had no problems.

Agree with Gizzy and the winter tyre route, but good luck with whichever you choose.

Last winter when I first had the GTi I was having some second thoughts because of the sliding around in the snow part.

This year I had winter tyres fitted in November, and it's running around like it was on caterpillar tracks.  This is a really lame reason for parting with the car, when the solution is right there, and not even particularly expensive.  (Cost me £240 for a pair of winter tyres, fitted to the 17" Monzas, and I was needing new tyres anyway, so if you like it hasn't cost me an extra penny so far.)

I live 800 feet up in the Pentland Hills, and my road to work crosses the 1,000 foot mark.  We are NOT short of snow.  I have to get up a hill out of the village with a hill start to get on to the main road.  I've been making it into work like clockwork.  Including one morning when I arrived to find the whole exercise had been declared too dangerous and the office was closed.

The solution is a LOT cheaper than changing your car.  The winter tyres turn it into an entirely different beast.  The difference is phenomenal, and that's with only two, as well.

Rolfe.

Unfortunate news Mr Squirrel.
I can understand your issues, I'm a little spoilt as I only live a couple of miles from work and can walk if the going gets nasty. Then again that's why I live that close to work.
It's funny really, not so long ago you couldn't give a 4x4 away (costs, social unacceptance during the 'gas guzzler' propoganda days) and now they're pretty much in demand thanks to the conditions over the last few weeks.
I'd say wait until the weather settles into spring and GTIs are back on peoples minds again before selling the thing, that's also when 4x4s go into their seasonal decline and the cost balance should swing more in your favour.

In fact if everyone clubs together and helps me buy a 4x4 so I can drive in the snow, I can guarantee the next few winters will be the mildest since the Jurassic period as everything I do seems to go arse shaped!

Don't go!

Go on flea bay and buy an old discovery for under 2 grand and you'll get anywhere in the snow, two of the guys in work have done this and not looked back and you'll  only need to use it for a few weeks each year.

Because of this a Merc e320 cdi and a lexus is220d taking up full time residence in the works car park :-)

I've bought one too @ 1400 quid for fun in the snow :-)
