I'm with the Doc on this one.

The loss that you will realise when selling the Golf will more than pay for a prefectly serviceable used 4x4. You will probably only need it for a few weeks of snow each year, so the rest of the year won't have to put up with its higher running costs and normal road compromises. Obviously you will need to tax it, but you can insure them through a specialist insurer on a limited mileage, agreed value policy. The type of policy that people use that go green laning. I know a few people that pay well less than £200 a year for theirs.

Seriously, do the sums, it adds up.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Keep your GTI and buy a Fiat Panda 4x4 with winter tyres.

Running cost will be next to nothing.

The only downside is if one have an accident with this tinky toybox, you got no chance!

Unless you need more space and you don't mind DEPRECIATION, I don't think one need to change your motor just for a few days of snow! Besides, a set of winter tyres will cost less. My friend in Latvia can drive their GTI in -20 degree. I just think as a country, we don't deal with the weather very well.

Wow thanks guys for all your kind words of support!

Interesting point regarding the Winter Tyres, especially those using them! It will be a great shame having to let the GTI go, as in the summer it's great fun. Windows down, country lanes, warm breeze....... ahhhhhhhhhhhh!! I remember those days

I'll have a serious look into the winter tyres.

The problem is where i live. I'm on a steep hill which nothing but 4x4's make it up and i don't fancy leaving the GTi away out of sight! Especially at night, i like her tucked away in the garage!

Have a read up on the Autosocks.co.uk website. they may be a good option for getting up the hill ( for next year now ).

Do you know that the FWDs that aren't making it up have winter tyres on?  'Cos it's my bet they haven't.

I am simply gobsmacked by what my GTi can get up now it has these tyres on the front.  It is absolutely phenomenal.  I would never have believed that a simple matter of a change of rubber compound and some nifty tread patterns could make so much difference.  I swear it's like driving a bloody Land Rover!

Being serious, it will never be as good as a 4WD in winter tyres, but I'd back the GTi in winter tyres against a 4WD in summer tyres any day of the week.  And I have a sneaky feeling that what you've seen getting up your hill might be 4WDs in summer tyres.

So think about that for a few minutes.

Rolfe.

Thanks Rolfe.

My neighbour has an Edt 30 and normally leaves work about 20 mins before me. On summer tyres he makes it about 15 meters. I would guess no one has got winter tyres in my area. A defender has got them massive off road things and i see him blasting it up the hill most mornings.

I'll defiantly investigate the winter tyres as it would seem they would do the job nicely. Seen a few vids on You Tube.

The GTI might be saved!!!!

So many of you have MTS (Margaret Thatcher Syndrome), as she would cut the arm off if one had gangerine of the finger!

Just a bit of snow and everyone wants to get a revolting 4x4. Amazing overkill.
Next, it will be ex-army tanks that will be in demand.

Get some winter tyres for Gawd's sake and stop burrowing in the wrong places.
