If you look along the top edge of the door were the window is you will see the rubber actually has a fur covering this fills with water and freezes to the metal. Some have stuck tape on this fur so that the tape gives before the fur and allows you to open the door.

Im told this is why the sponge is there as it was bending the bottom of panels on the mk5. as the ice had nowere to crush into and so ght out the bottom of the door i remember a few years ago seeing the photos of mk5s were this had happened. Im told in bad weather countries the mk5 also had that hole were the sponge is on the mk6 to stop the bottom of the door bending in this location.

ah yes i think i know what you mean, it's not actually rubber seal, its like a flap or something with very short "bristles" almost like super-thin carpet or something. first time this happened i did have a quick look and seen and ran my finger along an iced up bit of the door seal, i remember thinking it sort of felt like the edge of a crusty dessert or something. will have to look for some suitable tape

as for the ice near the hinge it just doesn't feel right forcing the door open making it break ice....

Well she's home.... the GTi that is. The snow has pretty much melted on the roads round here so it was easy getting the car up the hill today. I turned the ESP off which helped as Steve30 suggested.

I shall be avoiding hills like the plague from now if it snows again ( unless I get some winters tyres that is )
