It's official the R32 is quickest, Top Gear says so....  I've just conducted a similar test with my Scaletric and you're right, the R32 is quicker (especially in the corners)..

3 Cars, 1 set distance and a stopwatch. its all so complicated.

the top test track is only a small track so over a 70 lap race the GTI & ED30 would get lapped twice.

hows that for HAHA!! 

p.s. both cars were driven by the stig, and as we know ben collins is a pretty good driver having beaten Barrichellos round the same track.

.... on different days in different conditions with a added pinch of Top Gear controvesy..  Anyway, I think most were reffering to out right performance as apposed to round a track tbh..

different days granted. but very similar condition. I would normally agree with you on the controversy front, but they tested the R32 before the ED30, and they didnt mention the GTI lap times iirc as they compared it to the 130i.

My GTI is very quick in the right conditions.. but thats just it, they have to be the right conditions. Usually this quickness only stands in a straight line anyway. Where as the R32 despite being heavier did not understeer like the GTI does. It simply cannot get the same levels of grip the R32 could.. despite having to drive both in a slightly different manner.

Im not trying belittle the GTI (i have one ffs) but there are so many on here that are blinded by this GTI is quicker stuff its a joke. This thread was started by nosher ffs!!

Get an ED30 with 4wd and say bye bye to the R32, Ed30 and GTI

I agree R32 is better to drive and I came out of an ED30.  Its not about the straight line speed. The handling is much more planted in the 32, brakes stop harder and I prefer non turbo engine but thats just my honest opinion.  Looks better too.  Thats a fact :-)

The R32 is a better looking car and it drives better, sound is addictive but 400 quid tax is why i never bought one, Ed30 was the next best thing to it!!

Same here the £400 tax put me off and the mpg......now my ed30's only doing 23!
The sound of the R32 is fantastic though
