speedo going faster than me

Have you got different size wheels and/or tyres to the originals ?  How do you know the speedo is out just out of interest ? Has it been a problem for a while or has it just started happening ?

Yea mine does the same, about 10 to 20 mph faster, I think mine is 'cos i got the gearbox from a gti convertable, might just be a later type spedo cable? i dunno but it doesn't both me so i never got it fixed

:huh:mine is a convertable so don't now just got car :embarassed:so how would i find out about the right cable

Mine does it too, i've been told that if you've got bigger wheels than the original specs then its just the way it goes. Not much u can do about it ive also been told. You'll just ust have to calibrate it with someone in front of you. Get them to drive at 30 and remember what yours is, then do 40, 60, etc. N.B. I don't condone driving whilst using a mobile phone but unless you;ve got a mate with an excessively loud voice i reckon thats the best way.

If there is a way round this i'd like to know though?!?

speedos are always under. rarely over.

bigger wheels generally make the speedo a bit more accurate due the increased circumferance.

the best way of figuring out how bad it is is to use a gps. using someone elses car will only give you an indication of the difference between the two cars.

yeah GPS is the best way. mine was within 1mph of the GPS speed all the way up to 120mph and I'm running wheels 3inches bigger than standard!

if you've changed the box you could have the wrong bit in the there reading the speed. I know there's a white and red one in the 140 and 160mph 'boxes for the mk2. maybe that has something to do with it.

is it a constant 10mph out throughout the range or varies? has someone changed your dials to white ones and stuck the needle on in the wrong place. I know mine rests at 10mph and then doesn't move until I get to 11mph.

You can work out the speed you should be travelling at working off your rpm for example so can check how far out your speedo is.

I know on the MK1 you can buy different coloured gears from VW for the end of the speedo cable and these will alter/re-calibrate the speedo to compensate so you dont have to live with it.

There was a posting on old Campaign Register forum with the different types but I think it is a case of trial and error anyway. If you tell the VW parts man what colour gear you have now and if you are over or under reading may be able to suggest which one you need (i.e. with more or less teeth on it)
