Rear brake carrier removal help - please!
« on: 21 October 2010, 18:52 »
Hello all,

After a bit of help/some suggestions please!

Currently trying to remove the rear brake caliper carrier on my MK3 so I can get the disc rotor off and replace the wheel bearings.

I'm using the guide (http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/rearbrakes/index.htm) but the only bit that doesn't make sense is how to remove the 8mm allen key bolts (http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/rearbrakes/Dsc03061.jpg) - there is absolutely no way that technique will work!

I've had the bolt soaked in penetrating lube all afternoon, but even with a 2 foot long lever on my allen key I can't get the bolt to budge! Tried 'shocking' it by hammering the allen key but no luck... Yes, I am going the right way

Any ideas? Break out the blowtorch? Give the head of the bolt a good smack to try and shock it loose? Edit: Tried that, no luck... Allen key fitting in the bolt now looks a bit like a Torx fitting, don't think it'll be long before it's rounded out... :(

Thanks!
Adam

Mine were the same. Are you using allen sockets or an allen key? Id use a socket and extension, give it a beating so it sits nicely and use a long ratchet to get it off.

Mine were so tight they did round but I have the benefit of owning bolt grippers on a 3/8 drive. Used a long ratchet inside a long pipe and lost some skin but at least it came off

Thanks for the tips guys - I envisaged problems so ordered some a bolt gripper set earlier today... Using an allen key at the moment but I think an allen socket would be a good idea as you said... less flex and less 'twist'... Halfords here I come!

There's enough room to get a good swing on the rear-most bolt, but the other one located right next to the ABS sensor... how on earth did you get an extension bar in there!?

Cheers!

Hellfrauds retards had lost the key to the tool cabinet... had to buy the bog standard tool... Thought I felt the bolt loosening, but... evidently not

Fail.
