hi, its a 97 mk3 gti 8v and the car stalls even if i give it some throttle and i can smell petrol after a couple of go's?? A m8 of mine tryed bypassing the imobiliser but the car wont start at all like this. If it was the ignition switch, I assume it wouldnt start at all?? Or do i have to get my key coded again or is it possible to do it myself??

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
cant bypass the immob without sending the ecu away to have it defeated on these its built into the ecu.  you need to get vag-com on the car to find out exactly why it is kicking in. could be any number of things from immob box broken, reader coil failure to it loosing the key matching or its just lost power.  Reader coil would be 1st port of call if you really cant get it on vag com, you'll find em on any post-96 mk3 golf and loads of other vags from 96 onwards.

the keys are matched to the immob box under the dash, the matched box and keys are then coded to the ecu. if you get another immob box with matched keys you can swap this over then use vag-com to match it to your ecu. take the chip out of the supplied key(s) and fit to your old keys, jobn done.

watch out though the very late mk3s and later vags have a different immob box which has different plugs on. ideally check which plugs your old box has on it before you go out and buy a coil and/or box

The immobiliser/alarm fob is a seperate unit on mine. Its a little key fob, that has one button and a red led on it. To start the car i have to turn on the ignition to the first click..... press the button on the fob and then turn the key to start the engine.
Does that mean its not the original immobiliser ?? If it is an after market immobiliser il try and find out what make/model it is tommorrow.
I will also try and get vag-com to see what comes up??

Thanks again for your help  .

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
you have 2 immobilisers on your car, the aftermarket setup plus the one that is built into the ecu.  you need to get it on vag-com, that will tell you exactly why the factory immobiliser is kicking in. wrong key, faulty immob box, faulty reader coil, ecu communication failure etc
