Bomb  Or have you got a watch dog

Tappets are most likely - they are the bits the cam presses to open the valves.

A good oil and filter change may help solve this. Some people recommend an engine flush or run the car with about a litre of ATF fluid (auto transmission fluid) in the oil for a few hundred miles before the oil change. Do your own research on the engine flush or atf fluid because there are lots of people recommending that this is good and plenty saying its bad.

New tappets are fairly cheap or you can clean up your old ones but a bit complex getting them out.

Ticky, what do you mean?

My alternator was on its a way out a while back, and it made a sort of ticking noise. Now been replaced and all is silent again. Nothing but the sound of the engine running and exhaust grumbling.

Put a screwdriver on the engine (rocker cover) and put an ear to the handle, the ticking should be louder if its the tappets.
If not then look for other culprits!
