To be fully realistic, on as simple an engine as the 8v is, a cone filter/panel filter or whatever is going to make the square root of sod all difference without the engine being tuned up using cams/ecu fine tuning etc. and that goes for power losses also, heat soak won't kill your power drastically, but you'll certainly not notice any improvement outside of noise. Sheilding and routing a cold air feed are simple and effective fixes also. As for fitting, find out first if you have a Bosch or Hitachi MAF (the box with wires going into it), if its bosch you're in luck as you can pick up cold air intake kits compatible for 15 quid on ebay. If it's Hitachi custom is the only way to go unless you can find an adapter the correct size (Bosch have a square hole, Hitachi round as far as I can gather, the former is more widely supported).
