mk2 gti box fits, but you need a different clutch kit if its an 8v box. 16v one is a direct fit, but 5th is quite short so you'll run out of revs when you get to 120mph and cruising on mway will be a bit more buzzy. the rest of the gears are tighter than the mk3 gti box as well.

trouble comes if you have a later mk3, as they use a different flywheel. if you get a mk2 8v box and you have a late mk3, you need to buy a late mk3 1.8 clutch kit. with the earlier mk3s you just buy mk2 8v clutch kit.

you can tell the difference by checkign the flywheel, the early flywheel has 2 locating dowel pins, the later ones have just the 1.  also while on the subject of the dowel pins, make sure you line these up with the pressure plate properly, otherwise you'll damage the pp when you try to do up the bolts

The actual work on the box took about an hour maybe, its not too hard. Took about 5-6 hours overall though as we did it with the engine still the the car, and was a bit of a mission getting it in and out around all the other stuff thats in the way and some of the bolts are awkward to get to when theres engine in the way lol.
Mine is a later 97 mk3 so was just a simple unbolt old one bolt on new one. The gear selecter thing (technical term) needed to be adjusted as it wouldnt go into reverse after new box was fitted but thats just a 2 minuite job as well

anyway, thanks for all your help, i'll have to see what the future brings!

Says the man who replies to such a post that doesn't help the original poster in anyway whatsoever? "Brilliant".

Sam

you could get a new clutch kit for around £100 and if fitting a new gearbox it would be easy to do it at the same time, I got my 2nd hand box for £100 so your looking at around £200 to get it back on the road. well worth it imo if the rest of the car is in good nick :)
