Punto GT Vs 16 Valver!
« on: 10 December 2004, 17:35 »
Hey all.

Today i was in my Dads 5dr Mk2 Golf Gti (16v) and we were on the duel cariageway and came up to a round about and this little yellow Fiat punto was stuck behind us, dad pulled into the slow lane and as normal put foot down and to our supprise this little yellow Punto GT kept up and even over took after 70mph with considerable ease  :embarassed:.

Now we thought the golf goes really really well considering its got 160k and normally out does most cars but this punto flew, dunno spec.

The only excuse that i could think off and tell him is that the golf has a kind of idealling problem and stalls when we stop and say when you push the clutch down for a set of traffic lights it drops under 1,000rpm and dies. Does it effect the performance much or is this punto just a faster car?

Just curious lol

If you've got 160k on the clock there is no way the car is in top form at the moment. Sorry.

At the very least the injectors are probably over the hill, the fuel system may have problems, and the fact that it stalls is not a good sign.

Stalling can be a number of things, the usual suspects around here will tell you the ISV stuff.

However, you coil could be dying, the lift pump could be dying, the injectors went to heaven a few years ago, fuel filter is clogged up. The list is endless.

If the car was in top form, then it would easily level peg with the GT till about 70-80, and then it would be murdered. It'd be GT in the rear view mirror time.

Those Puntos weigh as much as a bag of crisps and can run stupid amounts of boost for many thousands of miles before they go bang, they're not as easily dealt with as you might think. :undecided:

The cars reguarly serviced and well loved. Full VAG SH etc.

Ive read up and the idealling problem seems a very common problem and does result in power loss.

And btw Heres the spec of a Punto GT (its an 8v Turbo)

Max power: 136 HP at 5750 rpm
0-60 Time At: 7.8 Seconds

So its as fast as a Golf Gti

Maybe the punto was an abarth, mate has one, the one with the subtle little scorpion badge, if it was they are fast as fook, 1.8 turbo I think, but hey, it's still a fiat so it will be in the scrappers in a couple of years time or in the garage, permanently !
......now officially dubless.

everyone thinks thats what happens to fiats, but the modern fiats are much much better.

what always got me about my recent fiats was that they enjoyed being thrashed. and i mean totally thrashed for hours.

the valver did not enjoy being thrashed - dont get me wrong - it delivered and it always played to the best of its ability. however, after 2-3 hours of thrashing the golf, it always felt just too loose, and you had to drive with respect for a few days to make the engine tight again.

fiat engines felt totally different. after 2-3 hours of beating the engine to death - they simply came back for more - and some more. the more you beat them - the more they came back for more.

it was something i could never understand about fiats. i think in the end it came down to the fact that fiat know how to make good engines. considering ferrari are in their stable and the way italians drive, its probably no coincidence either.

100,000 trouble free miles in 4-5 years with new fiats. never had any real problem.

had stupid problems that were always dealer fixed under warranty, like my new Seicento Sporting that had 3 horns in the first 8 weeks of its life.

that said, the dealership were great - courtesy car everytime. which happened to be a punto. i never owned a punto, but i'd certainly never turn down a 1.2 if i got offered one. they are totally thrashable and rewarding to drive.

fiats problems at the moment though are the dealers giving crap service. they have a great line up right now, but are really let down where it matters.

the other problem is that no one looks after a fiat. i mean - whats the point - its only a fiat - and so subsequent owners get cars that have been relatively unloved - which means problems in later life.

each to their own at the end of the day :)
