annoying sound in a mk4
« on: 06 April 2010, 10:09 »
hi all,

i haven't played with stereo's since i put mine in a couple of years ago as just happy with how it was but now got a problem and can't work it out without going down an expensive route so hope i'm wrong........

driving along the 6x9 rear speakers make a kinda rattling noise like they are loose but only happens when they are on........

also the speakers make a high pitch wine which gets higher with the revs......

both noises disappear when i turn the stereo off so it's something with them rather than just loose for the first problem.

they are the yellow pioneer 6x9's (accelerate i think) running off an amp, i can find out more details if needed but can't remember model numbers or anything off the top of my head

thanks for any help

Sounds like interference - especially the whine.

Check all earth connections and keep the earth cables as short as possible and check the amps connections including the speaker cables are secure.

Amp 'live' cables touching amp earth cables can cause interference issues and they cannot be allowed to touch as the shielding around them is usually not that thick or well insulated.

Also keep the RCA cable away from the power cables.  Run the power cable down one side of the car and the RCA cable down the other.

As for the 'rattle' do you only get this when the stereo is on and there is audiable music playing?  Could be damaged/blown speaker and the rattle is the damaged cone moving?

I would fit other speakers just to see if they 'rattle' too that way you know its the amp/wiring and not your 6x9's.

finally got round to this last night and found the whine was because one of the amps on my subs had part fallen off so the RCA's were resting against the live wire.

so nice having that gone!!  currently held in place with a bouncy ball.....

the rattle is only when the stereo is on but is there when the music is paused as well i think.......

is there a way to check the speakers without getting another set as i don't have a spare set and don't know of anyone with some......

if they are blown can anyone suggest a decent set?

I always found JBL was good for the money and they don't break the bank.

If you suspected a wiring problem causing the noise from the speaker then change the wires around and if the other one makes the noise then it's a fault there. If the same speaker makes the noise then it's probably damaged.

Do you turn you volume down to nothing when you turn the stereo off? Some people I've known have blown speakers just by not turning it down after use and the sudden surge can rip the speaker when it's cold.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

might have to have a look into those then.

i believe the wires are all ok but i'll double check that later.

i have forgotten to turn them down a couple of times but it's not a regular thing and seems a bit wierd as i only noticed the noise after i took all the amps and speakers out to help a mate move and then put them back the noise started........

would the strange rattle sound get louder with the volume of the stereo if it was a problem with wires or a blown speaker?

just wondering because if i turn the music up then the sound goes away - i'm guessing i just can't hear it but would have thought if it was something like a blown speaker that the rattle would get louder with the music.......
