I don't like Mr J clarkson but when he came out with the coment that went something like you only buy a cockster because you cannot afford a 911 i think he hit the nail on the head.

I sold my 2 year old Cayman S (9000miles on the odo) privately in november 2008 for just £24500. Almost £24000 depreciation!

If you are a second hand car buyer with cash to burn a hole in your pocket, you want the recession to come back!
Prices for good low mileage sportscar will continuse to rise as summer approaches!

I sold my immaculate 996 C4S (loaded with lots of options) back in September with 16000 miles on it and was on the receiving end of £50k in depreciation.
Then there were the running costs on top of that...

Whoever bought it ended up with a sublime car...but one I had just come to the end of wanting to own, having finally had enough of it haemorrhaging money out of my bank account.

Would I do it all again if I was in the same position?
Hell yeah...
It was the best motoring time of my life and what price the memories of v-maxxing a 911 in germany or lapping the 'ring in a 911?

If it's an itch you need to scratch...get it done.
You'll love it.

Mmmmmm...gotta disagree on that one....Got my RS4 and never looked back..traded My MK5 GTI for a MK5 R32...then got the RS4...Love it to bits...The Cayman comes across as a bit "gay" for me...thats why i like my "macho" RS4!!! LOL...

Lets be honest here...how many prospective Cayman/911 buyers think "hang on, I may need to move a wardrobe or 5 people with luggage...I had better buy an RS4"?
If you want a proper sportscar to learn, and understand...you don't buy an RS4.
If you want an RS4, then a 2 seat or 2+2 sportscar just isn't going to cut it.

Different strokes for different folks.

Thanks for that. appreciated.

i'm booked in to look at yellow 07 plate 2.7 this aft. although i don't think i'll be tempted for yellow. It'll be interesting to see how the 2.7 engine performs plus with 5 speed box - i'll report back this eve. I might be surprised and stick with the Golf :smug:   doesn't help that its chuffin raining today!

I wouldn't buy a Speed Yellow Boxster either...it just doersn't suit the car in my view. And that's from someone who bought a Speed Yellow C4S!

I'll hazard a guess you'll come away dissapointed with the 2.7 5 speed Boxster.
Great chassis...but just not enough oomph to make it really interesting.

Try to blag a spin in a 3.4 Cayman...that's a whole different game!

well test drive complete...

Firstly, the 2.7 engine.... Yes there is a big dfference between the 3.4, however, it's quick enough. Plus sounds fantastic. When i got back in the GTI, it did seem rather sedate in comparison. Different cars tho', so can't really compare.

Chassis - very good. The salesman seemed to think that he needed to thrash the car and get it stepping out on roundabouts in order to sell to me.... Honestly, even if i wanted the car that i test drove i wouldn't have bought it for that reason! p!llock!

Colour -

The most impressive thing about the experience today was the standard of the approved cars they churn out. There was a 2003 boxter and a 911 in the showroom, and there wasn't a mark on them. prestine condition. Plus come with a warranty that's the same as you get with a new car.  In my opinion (no experience of buyng 2nd hand cars), it's worth the extra a couple of thousand you pay to buy one from an OPC.

Will i get one?  Depends on what they offer for trade in (gettng back to me on monday). I might have a punt at private sell. But i'm not prepared to lose a chunk of money in order to get one. I'll just wait a couple of years, and save more pennies for a Cayman

Instead of an ugly little Boxter why not trade the Golf in for a camper van.
You get beds, a cooker, shower, toilet, TV, fridge, a tremendous driving position and more fun than the little push me pull you cheapster can ever hope to give.
