All to do with aerodynamics (spelling ?) without the spoiler airflow forces water off the screen with it fitted tends not to.

im on the fence with that, i find the spoiler helps guard the screen from rain, but the rear end of the golfs are terrible for building up dirt fast!, same on all the MK's iv had (2.3,4)

Changes the direction of the turbulent air going over the roof, wouldn't have thought such a small spoiler would have made much difference though, guess you'd only find out by taking it off and trying it.

I noticed a lot of difference

I previously had an Integrale Evo 2 which had an adjustable roof spoiler and that made a big difference when you stood it in the vertical position.
