« on: 28 February 2010, 16:04 »
Hi Guy's,

Its been a wee while but I'm back this time in a Golf TDI 130!! I've noticed that I've got a kind of air sucking / whooshing on acceleration - can hear it with the window open - any ideas????

Cheers

It bloody flies when you give you some to be honest but I do get plumes of sh!t coming out of the back end.

The noise is coming from the engine and with the drivers window open it's very noticeable - Put it in 5th tonight at about 30-40mph and could still hear it. It sounds like it's turbo related or induction related????

smoke is normal - its the quantity you need to be worried about lol

what's it like with the window closed?? I had a boost leak and it sounded like the air was rushing in through the vents

Stick you head under the bonnet and check for any obvious signs of loose pipes

Also look down by the drivers side wheel arch as some of the pipework runs along there

Whats a dodgy amount of smoke to look out for?? I'm talking a fair old amount as in if i look through the rear view mirror it's really bloody noticeable

The hissing / air / whooshing noise is really bloody loud with the drivers window open but can't say I can hear it with it shut. My bro had a drive tonight without me mentioning it and he turned to me and said 'what the f**k is that noise?'

I was going to ask whether you are getting a lot of smoke at the same time as whooshing noise.
Almost certainly an air leak as Rhyso says.
Check all your hose connections, especially around the air cooler/heat exchanger. It will be somewhere between the turbo outlet and the inlet manifold.

Cheers for the reply.

Where do I need to look for these leaks? I've only had the car a few days and I don't where things are located in the bay (turbo, intercooler etc)

Cheers for the help.

On your car where my big blue pipe is, you'll find an equivalent black plastic pipe

Your intercooler is located behind the lower front grill on the drivers side

From the back of that runs your pancake pipe inside the drivers wheel arch into a red turbo pipe into the turbo

Check all the connections - you might find that the lugs are worn and the only option is to replace the pipe.  Or you might be lucky and just the o-rings are perished - each one is about £2 each from the dealers
