I agree with Rolfe.
5 door is so much more practical if you have kids.
If you haven't got kids (although I know you have) the occasional person getting in and out the back is ok but when it is constant it is a right pain. Its all subjective whether 3 or 5 door looks better.
I used to think 3 door cars looked more sportier but with the Golf I think that look still remains with the 5 door.

Rolfe - I'd have to be a sad, sad person to waste time 'lying' to you about this subject - it's so unimportant in the scheme of things....why?!
....and I know what 'procrastinating' means but, subject to my checking, I think my use of the verb 'to prevaricate' is also correct.... but will check...

ok, Rolfe and av1w (and others if you suggested the 3 to 5 door change)

I'll ask the question of the dealer  -  how will a change from 3 to 5 dr affect my BW (haven't got one yet)?

I would add the side rear airbags.

That leaves the matter of the colour.....I chose the carb grey with the 3 dr  -  is the colour ok with the 5 dr? Could chage to red  -  claws back some of the extra spend but does choosing a non-met/pearl paint affect resale value or are the whites and reds ok in the case of the Golf? No disrespect but I like the red on the 3 dr but not sure with the 5 dr  -  good to have a colour which brings out the red 'stripes' on the front grill  -  get a bit lost on a red car.

....and bear in mind, you guys...I'm only responding to the huge amount of comments telling me that I should be going the 5 dr route!

Why don't you buy what YOU want, in the colour YOU want?
Any thoughts of colours effecting resale should put you firmly in the camp of never buying a new car...as it's financial suicide.

Just buy the car YOU want, in the colour YOU want and with the options YOU want, and enjoy it.

you're 100% right but the change from 3 to 5 dr does make sense and it's only by 'hearing' what forum contributors think that I am making the change  -  colour, of course, is far, far more subjective....just interested to see the opinion  -  though you are totally right...

there'd be no Golf forum if we weren't interested in what others have to say....

If it makes sense...then go for 5 door.
I don't get all this crap about 3drs looking more sporty than 5 drs...it's a Golf. Not a Zonda. They all look the same...if 5 doors make sense, get them...
I've had 5 door cars for years...and wouldn't go back to a 3 door purely because I'm too used to the practicality...no matter how some seem to think a 3 door looks 'sportier' (ha!)

Colour is entirely personal...just get what YOU like. You will have to live with it for years...not somebody on the internet who is 'guiding' you.

Jesus James, pick your spec, buy the car and leave it at that.
