Try http://vwnavi.com/forums/index.php you should be able to find any info you may want to ever know about the OEM VW systems.

Screen resolution of RNS 510 = 800 x 480 (? pixels) - do you have the pixel count?
Screen resolution Kenwood = 800 x 480 (1152000 pixels)
Screen resolution of Zenec = 1440 x 234 (336960 pixels)

If a screen is 800 x 480 it has 800 pixels horizontally and 480 vertical lines.  This means that you multiply 800 by 480 (hence 800 x 480) and you get 384000 pixels.

Thats generally how it works... I've no idea how Kenwood are getting 1152000 pixels considering they say its just a VGA screen?

If you divide the Kenwood pixel count of 1152000 by 3 you will get 384000 pixels!

Maybe they're counting the individual Red, Green and Blue pixels?!

You are right!
It does say 800 x 480 RGB on their specification for screen resolution.
Problem solved!

Spoke to a rather knowledgeable person just now regarding Sat Navs for the Golf.
He supplies and fits new RNS 510, Kenwood and Pioneer Sat Navs to VWs, Audis, etc
His take:
RNS 510 is superior on radio and the aftermarket ones are better on CD, DVD etc.
Radio reception from the aftermarket Sat Navs can be very poor even with boosters. This is due to arial incompatibility.

In theory the reception may not be as good.
