Spraying front and rear valances black
« on: 24 January 2010, 21:54 »
Hay all

Ok, i want to spray my front and rear valances black [there just black plastic atm] and my badge less grill so they all mach up with my mk4 golf TDi 2000 [i can get the colour code of the sticker in the boot right?]

Also i want to spray my VW badge on the rear and my stereo surrounds matt black.

Which is the best way to do this? As in process how many coats lacquer etc.

Depends on tools used etc.

If cans, I reccomend rubbing down with 180 then 400 then 800 then plastic primering. If they are textured it will be best to get a bodyshop to primer using 2 pak.

Then block down the primer and 4-6 light but firm coats of colour then three of laquer allowing ten minutes between each.

If garage equipment, different ball game.

That's what I would do anyway.

If they aren't texturted, a decent plastic primer will do.

Allow to dry so it doesn't look wet (5-10mins with cans) then another coat. Primer I'd do 5 light coats.

dont do it

it will look sh1te, not meaning to sound harsh but the textured valances will just peel in no time unless do correctly, and with rattle cans i doubt you will get a factory finish/match. save your money and get it done right...

why not?

For £15 it works just fine provided your prep the surface correctly.  OK, so it won't last as long but if you chip it you won't be too gutted at ruining your expensive paint job

Yeah i didn't colour code mine but that's not the look I'm going for.

Just take your time and build up the layers of paint and lacquer
