A subsequent post to that said it worked on the MkV but doesn't work on the MKVI.  I haven't tried it on purpose because I don't mind the windscreen headlight washers, I think they improve visibility.  However, given the way they work, I tend to agree that with the MkVI, that quick-flick trick wouldn't work.

On previous cars I have owned, they have only worked when the headlights were on!
I just put the lights to sidelights before squirting the window.
A bit of a pain but it saved the whole car getting a bath.

Is the Golf different?

OH MY GOD!!!  I tried this and it works!!!   :laugh:

Just slip into sidelights mode, pull the windscreen washer..... and the headlamp washer DON'T come on!

It is still a pain doing this.
Headlights off, squirt, headlights on!
Pain in the caddy.
I think I will take the fuse out for the dryer months!
