Hard choice...
« on: 12 December 2009, 23:58 »
I'm going insane trying to choose between a GTI and GTD. Problem is the HUGE difference in price. The GTD is 8000 pounds cheaper then the GTI over here. The GTD is actually a bit more expensive then the GTI in Germany. I do prefer petrol but for that amount of money I'm leaning towards the GTD. I know I'll have to decide for myself and take the plunge but I'd gladly listen to any experiences. I'm sure there are more people with this issue. Please help. :)

where are you based? Sounds like a bargin....but think you might have got your numbers mixed up? £8000 difference? yeah right.
Welcome to the site..btw
If you go for a factory order you might have to wait and wait, and wait..like alot of others, my advice is to decide quickly, order it and forget about it....

I bought my GTI after 20 years of turbo diesels. It doesn't have the mid-range 'shove' of a TD (unless you go for a remap like I did) or, of course the economy, but it's nicer to drive. TBH, if it were my only car, I would probably have got the GTD, but as we have 2 other vehicles in our household (both diesels), the GTI is really only used for pleasure on a sunny afternoon.

GTI looks and sounds far nicer than the GTD imo.  Also what is more expensive to buy will also be worth more in the future.  The cost of a car is not the purchase price, but the depreciation you suffer on it when you sell.

Don't get the GTD, you'll always be regretting your decision!

We'll it's true. I'm based in Norway. I've not mixed up my numbers. Starting price for a GTI is 458 960,- NOK and for the GTD 383 290,- NOK. Converted to pounds with todays currency that's 48 818 GBP for the GTI and 40 770 GBP for the GTD.

That's a good way to look at it. Makes it easier for me to get the GTI which I really prefer. It's still hard though. I'll decide within this week and just take the plunge. Dealers already have one GTI ready to be picked up but it's red. I was thinking of getting a less flashy colour. :) 4 months to wait is really annoying though.

Thanks for all the comments so far.

In that case, get the GTI. The GTD is superb, but you'll always have that niggling feeling that a GTI might have been even better.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^+1.

You'll drive past a GTI and go:-

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

How much is the 1.4 TSi GT in comparison?  Really liked the one I drove and only the 9 month wait put me off (have a GTD).  For my driving I thought it was as fast as my Mk5 but much cheaper to run...

Hate to think how much a Golf R would cost you!
