I won't even consider Golf R as the starting price is 70244,11 GBP over here.  Base price on a Golf 1,4 TSI 160hk is 32725 GPB.

Anyway I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the 8k more for a GTI to me. It's just so much more money and a GTD is still a good car though GTI will always have a little more excitement to it. My mind changes every day. At the moment I'm thinking maybe go for the more economical GTD now and buy a mk7 GTI when it comes out. This will be my first Golf. :)

1.4 TSI, FTW!

The TSI's running costs are far more reasonable than a GTI, but at least the TSI doesn't run on tight b*stard juice...

MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

where are you based? Sounds like a bargin....but think you might have got your numbers mixed up? £8000 difference? yeah right.
Welcome to the site..btw
If you go for a factory order you might have to wait and wait, and wait..like alot of others, my advice is to decide quickly, order it and forget about it....

We'll it's true. I'm based in Norway. I've not mixed up my numbers. Starting price for a GTI is 458 960,- NOK and for the GTD 383 290,- NOK. Converted to pounds with todays currency that's 48 818 GBP for the GTI and 40 770 GBP for the GTD.

GTI looks and sounds far nicer than the GTD imo.  Also what is more expensive to buy will also be worth more in the future.  The cost of a car is not the purchase price, but the depreciation you suffer on it when you sell.

Don't get the GTD, you'll always be regretting your decision!

That's a good way to look at it. Makes it easier for me to get the GTI which I really prefer. It's still hard though. I'll decide within this week and just take the plunge. Dealers already have one GTI ready to be picked up but it's red. I was thinking of getting a less flashy colour. :) 4 months to wait is really annoying though.

Thanks for all the comments so far.

Wow, I stand corrected, I imagine the petrol powered GTI gets taxed more than the deisel?
The difference is quite shocking; £8000+ compared to the £565 here in the UK.
I feel for you, as the saying goes, there's always someone else out there in a worse position......

£48800 Norway
£23015 England
£14900 USA

I hope you get paid handsomely....
With a 50% increase in mpg, the GTD makes good sense, £8000+ in your pocket and a 35% saving in fuel...it would be a no brainer for me...

£488000 Norway

Half a million quid? no ta!

£23015 England

I imagine 'Great Britain', or 'The UK is more apt, or do Irish, Welsh & Scottish customers just not get to buy a GTI?

I think I'd happily settle for the GTD if I was in your position Awry.
I can't say the 1.4TSI would light my fire in Golf guise, maybe that engine in a lighter car such as the Ibiza Cupra but the Golf is a heavy old bus. I know its torque figure on paper is quite reasonable but with all that weight to drag around it would have to be the 2.0 turbos for me.

Do they sell a 4motion mk6 anywhere other than the R? A 2.0 TDI 4motion would be quite a handy tool with a dash of ECU tweaking.  :smug:

I am sure AWRY understands clearly the use of England. Both are correct, I'm not sure AWRY would understand 'quid' though, perhaps pounds would be more apt.

Anyway, back on subject £488000 or not the GTD option seems a winner to me.

I briefly drove a 1.4 Scirocco and it was really quite quick.  Like the GTD, it doesn't sound like the GTI or have the same grip at speed but otherwise excellent.  Main problem is that it's hard to find one to test drive - the Scirocco I drove sold a couple of hours after I drove it and I couldn't fine a Golf GT 160 at any local dealers...

Norway pay 125% tax don't they?

A £10,000 car here would cost £25,000 in Norway.

I was over there a couple of weeks ago staying with my mate who works there.  He said they have ludicrous taxes on cars as they want people to use public transport.
If the public transports over here was like it was in Oslo, I'd get a bus / tram to work every day

Well regular tax is 25%, but cars have additional taxes for weight, horsepower and Co2. The Co2 part is almost negligible compared to weight and horsepower. Go figure :P It just doesn't make sense to me.

Here's the summary for taxes on a GTI I've configured:
MVA:     7912 GBP (Regular 25% tax on the car + equipment)
Weight:  5762 GBP
Motor:   14625 GBP (69,6 GBP per horse. Main reason the GTD is so much cheaper)
Co2:       2953 GBP
SUM:     31252 GBP

So my GTI is going to cost just abit over 54000 GBP. Some of it actually goes to VW. haha

Anyway enough nagging on my part. Good news is that I've decided. It's going to be a GTI! It's a bad economical decision. This one was decided by heart!

There are two more options I'm unsure about. Manual or DSG. I have to say I was set on a manual but after trying the DSG I'm quite impressed. The other thing is which color. I think I'm going for deep black or carbon grey.

Must have list:
Bi-Xenon's (Standard on GTI/GTD in Norway)
Winter pack (Standard ofc! haha)
Alarm
Media-in
RCD510 + Dynaudio
Darker windows at the back
Sunroof
DCC
18" Detriot

Not sure:
Phone bluetooth (What kind of antenna do I get on the roof? With and without this pack)
Parkingsensors (Do I get non-functional "dimples" on the fenders if I don't take this?)

Thanks for the help so far guys. I promise to get pics up the day I pick it up at the dealers. I've read that pictures is a must on this forum. It's going to be my first brand new car! Too bad I'll have to wait 4 months for it but at least the salt on the road is gone. :D

No dimples on the bumpers :
