The pulley has seized, I don't fully understand how they work but it seems it doesn't always engage witht he alternator or something. Anyhoo there is clearly no way round this special tool as it has to lock two bits from spinning while undoing something else. Not to worry though as the tool is pretty cheap and might in come in handy on my Dad's Bora as these pulleys seizing is very common.

THe garage reckon it'sll be fine for a while but I'm gonna see if I can get all the bits to do it on Saturday along with a Fuel filter, Oil Filter and Oil Change.

Yeah that's the fella. They reckoned it hadn't been seized long as the belt wasn't making a noise or flapping about but recommended I got it sorted in the next 1000 miles.

rubjonny managed to do my pulley (oo-er) without the tool... there is a method of locking the pulley (using an bar or something) while you crack the other nuts

Different kind of pulley mate. If it was one like yours or the ones on my MKII I would do as RJ did. These have a bearing arrangement in them so the outside and the inside of the pulley spin independently. You have to lock the inner and outer of the pulley while still getting into the inside to undo the nut.

Nah don't be silly, how were you to know it's got some stupid complex system for spinning the alternator. Was certainly news to me!
