Is a very high mileage Golf GTi with DSG a risky buy?

Had a look at Warrantywise and was quoted £350 for a warranty....they look pretty good too. Although I couldn't specify if my Golf GTI was auto or manual.

i was looking the other day, only thing i thought was odd was the choice of garage labour rates, guess it just allows more flexibility

There was a thread like this over on vwvortex recently. Some people there have mk5s with 150k+ and one guy had 220k  Seems that they are alright once you take care of them and keep it serviced regularly.

At 115k miles the car is proven a good one. As long as it has all the necessary work done at the right intervals then there should be no reason that the car isn't as good as a 50k one.

Are there any recommendations for where I could get a warranty from that would cover the gearbox?

I am having a comprehensive inspection by the AA done on the car this Thursday, if that comes back positive I think I will take the plunge....with the money saved I could hopefully get a warranty and get the bathroom done!

The 'AA' and 'comprehensive inspection' - especially on a Mk5 GTI with a DSG will probably not be worth the paper its written on.  You'd be far better getting a dedicated VAG independent specialist to inspect the car.

all this worry about DSG boxes failing and theres no evidence if they are looked after.  I would take the change and do what JV says and get a warranty and check its water tight!

Wouldnt the full vwsh be the evidence that the box has been looked after?

Not really.  Just look at how many posts there are on this forum about VW stealers NOT using LongLife oils (which were mandatory for ALL cars serviced in their workshops from Dec 08), or those stealers using Quantum oils (which are NOT approved for franchised dealer use), or those stealers using semi-synthetic oil in a high performance turbo engine.

And more alarming, there are a number of stealers who are NOT following the correct procedure for the DSG oil change! 

its pretty hard to mistreat the dsg, it wont let you change down to early. off the top of my head i think there is only over modification and miss use of the launch control that may effect it.

Ohhhh - you certainly can mistreat the DSG!

A DSG is always classed as an 'auto'.

No what I meant was, you could only pick a Golf GTI and couldn't specify whether it was a manual or DSG (auto) version....just struck me as odd as I would have thought the warranty for an auto would have cost more.
