Hi

I would be grateful for some advice as I am considering buying a very high mileage 05 plate Golf GTi DSG.

I have seen a 5dr Golf GTI DSG in the spec and colour I want for £9k (though I would only want to pay about £8k), the only problem is is that it has done 115k. It comes with FVWSH, and has had the cam belt and tensioners, and DSG oil change at 90k.

It looks in great condition with only some wear on the outer drivers side seat bolster.

An equivalent model with the spec I want with an average mileage would be around 12k-13k, so the chance to save circa £5k is very appealing. I would only do about 5k a year so the miles wouldn't sky rocket while I kept it for 4-5 years.

Now is this a risky buy at this mileage with the DSG box? Should I risk getting a bargain or add a few more grand to my budget and get a lower mileage model?

Grateful for any views.
Thank you.

Hmm not too sure to be honest mate, I had a Audi A3 with 80k on the clock when I brought it and ran it for another 70k with no problems at all. That was a 1.8t not sure about the 2.0TFSI with DSG. Dont think it will be a problem with the low mileage you are doing.

I have a 05 GTI, Black, Xenons, DSG, Leather, Parking Sensors etc... 52k miles Full VWSH. £13.5k if you decide not to go for that one

the clutches in the dsg box are supposed to last the life of the car, whatever vw deem that to be i do not know.

how about taking out a warranty on the car with a slice of the savings?

that way you get the car you want at a price you like, plus still loads saved.

you could buy the theoretical 12k car and it still die! :)

all this worry about DSG boxes failing and theres no evidence if they are looked after.  I would take the change and do what JV says and get a warranty and check its water tight!

Not so easy getting a water tight warranty on high mileage cars though. Max mileage is usually around 70k, after that there is a sliding scale that involves the owner part funding either the part or labour element (or sometimes both) to account for wear and tear.

Are there any recommendations for where I could get a warranty from that would cover the gearbox?

I am having a comprehensive inspection by the AA done on the car this Thursday, if that comes back positive I think I will take the plunge....with the money saved I could hopefully get a warranty and get the bathroom done!

Wouldnt the full vwsh be the evidence that the box has been looked after?

its pretty hard to mistreat the dsg, it wont let you change down to early. off the top of my head i think there is only over modification and miss use of the launch control that may effect it.
