Author Topic: Stodgy gearshift (Read 4023 times)

The gearstick operation on my Mk2 isn't as nice as it might be, but after 130k you can't really blame it. I've seen various bits claimed to improve this - some OE replacement parts and some aftermarket bits. I'll be investing in new shift bushes and ball pivot thingy; how much should I be looking to pay for these items?
I've also seen a Mk3 shift weight and various short throw kits. Where does the weight go, and has anyone used one? Are they any good? How about the short throw kits - any particular ones recommended?

My gearstick felt very sloppy at about 100,000 miles, I had the linkage changed and it felt like new again. Not a big job to do either

I've heard that the weighted bar can transform the gear change, iliminating the clunky feel

I had a similar problem but new linkages sorted it out and it really did feel
as good as new. Not expensive either.

Golf nutz do the ball and cup and all linkages for about ?12.50

get the relay ball replacment from these guys, only ?6 and will come withing 2 days - this is where the most sloppyness is felt

also a weighted shift rod, and shortshift set to about 30% will help loads

mk3 weighted shift rod is ?11 from VAG

Hi people,

I done mine at the weekend, had a bit of trouble getting the pin out but made a big differance

(ball and cup)

Only one thing tho, to get 1st I have to push down on the gear stick as if I was going into reverse

How can I get round this?? I even put on a new reverse stop plate but still no joy

you just need to re-align yours

first off you need somebody to hold the gearstick in the neutral position if you dont have the special VAG tool for doing this

then, if you look in the engine bay where the actual rod comes out of the tunnel you will see a small clamp on the end of it. loosen it and turn it slightly towards the driverside of the car. tighten back up then go feel your gears. you just need to keep on playing with this till you get it where u want it

Humm...iv seen that when I have taken a box out of the MK1 but on this I can only see two bars with ball joints on. Is there still an ajuster on there then?
